Hammel, Postmus named to All-HCAC tennis team

wtennisAnderson University’s Alex Hammel and Courtney Postmus have been named to the 2011 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Team on Tuesday.

Hammel has been All-HCAC for four years in a row at No. 1 single and No. 1 doubles while Postmus was named to the team for the second straight year. Postmus, a sophomore, played No. 2 singles and teamed up with Hammel at No. 1 doubles. Hammel was also named to the All-Sportsmanship Team for the third straight year.

Junior Tara Akers was named All-HCAC Honorable Mention for the second straight season. She played No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles this season.

AU finished the season 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the HCAC, advancing to the championship match of the post-season tournament for the first time in school history.

Ravens fall in HCAC women’s tennis title match

tennisWThe Anderson University women’s tennis team lost to Transylvania University 5-3 in the championship match of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament on Sunday at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis.

It was the first championship game appearance for the Ravens, who advanced to the title game by defeating No. 4 Manchester and No. 1 Rose-Hulman on Saturday.

Anderson’s victories came at No. 3 doubles and No. 4 and 6 singles.  Michaela Hammel teamed with Kourtney Brubaker to knock off Victoria Haugli and Samantha Voss 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.  Sylvia Schering defeated Mong at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-1, while Shel Willhelm handled Caroline Tapscott 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

AU finishes the season 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the HCAC.

Tennis team advances to HCAC Championship match

Tennis pix HCACThe Anderson University women’s tennis team advanced to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship match on Sunday against No. 2 seed Transylvania University at the West Indy Racquet Club at 10 a.m.

The Ravens defeated No. 4 Manchester 5-4 and then knocked off top-seeded Rose-Hulman 5-4 on Saturday in Indianapolis.

“I don’t even know how to feel and I was stunned,” said AU coach Sue Hammel. “I can’t believe it. I knew we won the match, but I still didn’t expect it. I am so excited for the girls.”

Against Manchester, Alex Hammel and Courtney Postmus each won two matches, including one together at No. 1 doubles. Hammel won at No. 1 singles and Postmus at No. 2 singles.

With the score tied at 4-4, Sylvia Schering clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles for the fifth and deciding point.

Other winners were the doubles team of Michaela Hammel and Kourtney Brubaker at No. 3 doubles.

Against Rose-Hulman, the score was again tied at 4-4, but this time it was Michaela Hammel at No. 4 singles that came through with the winning point. The freshman won in three sets by scores of 7-5, 1-6 and 6-2.

Alex Hammel and Postmus again won both their singles and doubles matches with Michaela  Hammel and Brubaker winning again at No. 3 doubles.

“We’ve worked so hard all year long and we had a team that I knew coudl do it,” said Hammel. “To see it come true today is amazing.”

It will be the first conference championship match appearance for Anderson and Hammel, who has been the coach for 22 seasons.

Postmus_webThe Anderson University women’s tennis team defeated Huntington University 6-3 on Tuesday night and knocked off Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Mt. St. Joseph 9-0 on Wednesday at the AU Tennis Courts.

Against Huntington, Sylvia Schering (No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles) and Michaela Hammel (No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles) each won two matches for the Ravens.

Other AU winners were Shel Willhelm (No. 5 singles), Katie Jo Gunnoe (No. 6 singles), Tara Akers (No. 2 doubles) and Kourtney Brubaker (No. 3 doubles).

Hammel wins HCAC women’s tennis weekly award

Hammel.AlexAnderson University’s Alex Hammel has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week on Monday.

Hammel finished the week with a perfect 8-0 mark, including a 6-0 mark in three HCAC matches.  Hammel has won 14 straight matches over the last seven contests for the Ravens, including a 12-0 record in HCAC matches during the streak.  The Ravens defeated Goshen, Defiance, and Franklin last week, while falling to Manchester 5-4.

Anderson (6-4, 5-3 HCAC) will close the regular season Wednesday against Mount St. Joseph and will enter the HCAC Tournament this weekend as the No. 5 seed.

AU women’s tennis team wins on Senior Day

Newell_web2The Anderson University women’s tennis team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Franklin College 8-1 on Saturday at the AU Tennis Courts for Senior Day.

In their final home contest, AU seniors Alex Hammel (No. 1 singles and doubles), Shel Willhelm (No. 6 singles) and Nicole Newell (No. 3 doubles) all won their matches.

Others winners for the Ravens were Courtney Postmus (No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles), Tara Akers (No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles), Michaela Hammel (No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles) and Sylvia Schering (No. 2 doubles).

AU (6-4, 5-3) travels to Huntington on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Alex Hammel, Courtney Postmus, Tara Akers, Sylvia Schering and Michaela Hammel each won at singles and doubles for the Ravens.

The other AU point came from the No. 3 doubles team of Hammel and Nicole Newell.

Alex Hammel led the Ravens with a pair of victories at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. She won at No. 1 singles by scores of 6-1, 6-0 and teamed up with Courtney Postmus to win at No. 1 doubles 8-3.
