Women’s Tennis shuts out Bluffton in HCAC match

WTennis_webThe Anderson University women’s tennis team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Bluffton University 9-0 on Wednesday at the AU Tennis Courts.

Alex Hammel (No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles), Courtney Postmus (No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles) and Michaela Hammel (No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles) all won two matches in the game.

Other AU winners were Tara Akers (No. 3 singles), Sylvia Schering (No. 4 singles), Shel Wilhelm (No. 6 singles) and the doubles teams of Michaela Hammel/Nicole Newell (No. 2) and Katie Joe Gunnoe/Kourtney Brubaker (No. 3).

AU (2-3, 2-2 HCAC) travels to HCAC foe Mt. St. Joseph on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Tennis team splits HCAC home doubleheader

Akers_webThe Anderson University women’s tennis team split a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matches on Saturday, defeating Rose-Hulman 5-4, but losing to Hanover 5-4.

Against Rose-Hulman, Alex Hammel accounted for two points for the Ravens. The senior won at No. 1 singles 7-6, 7-6 and teamed up with Courtney Postmus at No. 1 doubles to win 8-1.

Sylvia Schering won at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-2 and Shel Wilhelm was victorious at No. 6 singles 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. The other AU point came from the No. 3 doubles team of Kourtney Brubaker and Michaela Hammel 8-6.

Against Hanover, Tara Akers won twice to lead the Ravens. The junior won at No. 3 singles 7-5, 0-6, 6-2 and teamed up with Schering to win No. 2 doubles 8-3.

Other AU winners were Postmus at No. 2 singles (6-2, 2-6, 7-5) and Wilhelm at No. 6 singles (6-4, 6-0).

AU (1-3, 1-1 HCAC) hosts Bluffton on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

St. Francis spoils women’s tennis home opener

Wilhelm_webThe Anderson University women’s tennis team lost to St. Francis University 7-2 in the home opener on Thursday at the AU Tennis Courts.

Sylvia Schering accounted for the Ravens win a No. 3 singles by scores of 6-2, 6-4. The No. 1 doubles team of Alex Hammel and Michaela Hammel won 8-6 to account for the other point for the home team.

AU (0-2) hosts HCAC foes Hanover (10:30 a.m.) and Rose-Hulman (4 p.m.) on Saturday.

Transy edges AU women’s tennis in season opener

wtennisThe Anderson University women’s tennis team dropped its season opener at Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Transylvania University 5-4 on Saturday in Lexington, Ky.

Individual winners for the Ravens in singles were Courtney Postmus (No. 2), Sylvia Schering (No. 4), Michaela Hammel (No. 5) and Shel Williams (No. 6).

AU (0-1, 0-1 HCAC) travels to Rose-Hulman on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

AU women picked 4th in HCAC tennis poll

wtennisThe Anderson University women’s tennis team was picked to finish fourth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference pre-season coaches poll on Tuesday.

Rose-Hulman was selected to finish first with 96 points and eight first-place votes. Transylvania was second with 87 points, followed by Manchester (73), Anderson (67), Franklin (61), Hanover (58), Earlham (43), Mt. St. Joseph (33), Defiance (19) and Bluffton (13).

AU opens the season on Sept. 8 at Indiana Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
