Morency wins Defensive MVP; Weatherford All-HCAC

morencycaitlinAnderson University senior Caitlin Morency has repeated as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive MVP for the 2009 season. Senior Carol Weatherford joined Morency on the All-HCAC 1st Team.

Morency led the Ravens and the HCAC with 687 digs and 32 service aces and also had 13 kills and 10 assists in 116 games. Weatherford finished with a conference-best 157 blocks to go with a team-high 301 kills. She also had 119 digs and 27 service aces.

Seniors Kate McCollum and Jessica Berlin were named to the All-HCAC Honorable Mention team.  McCollum was second in kills (286) and digs (294) and also had 24 service aces and 46 blocks. Berlin finished with 143 kills, 47 digs, 26 service aces and 19 blocks, despite playing in only 53 games due to a season-ending injury before conference started.

Stephanie Weinman was named to the All-Freshman team. She had 93 kills, 25 assists, 54 digs and 36 blocks.

weatherfordcarolAU finished 17-15 overall and 4-4 in the HCAC before defeating Hanover in the conference tournament. They lost to Mt. St. Joseph in the semifinal round of the HCAC tourney.

Volleyball team falls in HCAC tourney semifinal

volleyball1The Anderson University volleyball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Hanover College in four games, but lost to No. 2 seed Mt. St. Joseph in four games in the semifinal round of the HCAC post-season tournament on Saturday at Founders Hall in Bluffton, Ohio.

Against Hanover, the scores were 15-25, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-19. Carol Weatheford led the Ravens with 10 kills and 13 blocks. Kate McCollum had nine kills, six digs and Tara Roberts had six kills, 15 assists, 14 digs and seven blocks.

Taylor Cox had 20 assists, 11 digs and Caitlin Morency added 14 digs. Stephanie Weinman and Molly DiRuzza chipped in with six kills and two digs each.

Against Mt. St. Joseph, the scores were 20-25, 25-18, 25-21 and 21-11. McCollum led the Ravens with 10 kills, seven digs and five blocks. Roberts had 14 assists, 11 digs, six kills and Weatheford had five kills, five blocks and two digs.

Cox had 15 assists, four digs and Morency added 19 digs. Allee Donaghy added seven digs and Sydnie Garber four blocks and three kills. DiRuzza chipped in with five kills and Weinman four kills.

AU finishes the season 17-15 overall and 4-4 in the HCAC.

Volleyball team beats Spartans in HCAC finale

volleyballThe Anderson University volleyball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Manchester College in three games on Tuesday night at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena in North Manchester. The scores were 25-20, 25-20 and 25-18.

Tara Roberts led the Ravens with 17 assists, 11 digs, 11 service points, five kills and two service aces.

Kate McCollum had 13 kills, 15 digs, seven service points, two blocks, two service aces and Caitlin Morency had 19 digs, 10 service points and two service aces.

Carol Weatherford had 14 kills, three blocks and Taylor Cox added 20 assists and nine digs. Stephanie Weinmann and Sydnie Garber chipped in with five kills and four blocks, respectively.

AU (16-14, 4-4 HCAC) will travel to Bluffton on Saturday for the HCAC post-season tournament.

Volleyball team splits 4 games at Illinois

volleyball5The Anderson University volleyball team split four games at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Bloomington, Ill.

The Ravens defeated Augustana in five games (25-20, 25-15, 19-25, 24-26, 15-8), but lost to Wartburg in five games (20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 16-14) on Friday night and defeated Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday in five games (20-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-18, 15-10), but lost to Chicago in three games (25-19, 27-25, 25-18).

Carol Weatherford was named to the All-Tournament team, leading the Ravens with 43 kills, 26 blocks and 16 service points.

Kate McCollum had 35 kills, 36 service points, 57 digs, three service aces and Tara Roberts had 38 kills, 24 service points, 91 assists, eight blocks and four service aces. Caitlin Morency had 114 digs, 38 service points, four service aces and Taylor Cox added 95 assists and 49 digs.

Allee Donaghy added 50 digs, 16 service points and Molly DiRuzza and Sydnie Garber chipped in with five blocks each.

AU (15-14, 3-4 HCAC) travels to Manchester on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the regular season finale.

Volleyball seniors finish with win; clinch HCAC berth

weatherford_webThe Anderson University volleyball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Rose-Hulman in four games on Wednesday night at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium for Senior Night. The Ravens won by scores of 25-23, 25-20, 19-25 and 25-17.

Carol Weatherford led the Ravens with 19 kills, five service points, five digs and three blocks. Kate McCollum had 13 kills, 10 digs, six service points, four blocks and Tara Robers had 23 assists, 13 digs, nine kills and seven service points.

Stephanie Weinman had eight kills, eight digs, three blocks and Caitlin Morency added 23 digs, 15 service points and two aces. Taylor Cox added 30 assists, eight digs and Allee Donaghy chipped in with 12 digs and 12 service points.

With the victory, the Ravens also qualified for the HCAC post-season tournament on Nov. 7-8 at the regular season champion. The top six teams qualify for the conference tournament.

AU (13-12, 3-4 HCAC) plays Wartburg at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on Friday at 5 p.m.

Foresters handle volleyball team in three games

volleyball4The Anderson University volleyball team lost to Huntington College in three games on Saturday at Huntington. The scores were 26-24, 25-21 and 25-22.

Kate McCollum led the Ravens with 10 service points, 10 digs, nine kills and two service aces.

Carol Weatherford had 12 digs, six kills, five blocks and Molly DiRuzza had three kills, three digs and two blocks. Caitlin Morency had 18 digs, four service points and Taylor Cox added 13 assists and eight digs.

Paige Allen added nine assists, five digs and Allee Donaghy six digs and four service points. Stephanie Weinman chipped in with five kills and Sydnie Garber three kills.

AU (12-12) hosts Rose-Hulman on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

AU win HCAC home volleyball contest with Grizzlies

weinman_webThe Anderson University volleyball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Franklin College in three games on Thursday night at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium. The Ravens defeated the Grizzlies by scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-16.

Kate McCollum led the Ravens with 14 service points, 12 kills, eight digs and three service aces. Carol Weatherford had six kills, four blocks, two service points and Molly DiRuzza had six kills and three digs.

Taylor Cox had 23 assists, 11 service points, 12 digs and Caitlin Morency added 17 digs, five service points. Paige Allen chipped in with nine assists, three service points and Allee Donaghy 10 digs and three service points.

AU (12-11, 2-4 HCAC) travels to Huntington on Saturday at noon.

Mt. St. Joe hands volleyball team HCAC road defeat

volleyball3The Anderson University volleyball team lost to defending Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Mt. St. Joseph in three games on Tuesday night in Cincinnati, Ohio. The scorers were 25-20, 25-15 and 25-22.

Carol Weatherford led the Ravens with eight kills, four blocks and Caitlin Morency had 20 digs. Taylor Cox and Paige Allen had 16 and nine assists, respectively, and Allee Donaghy had eight digs.

Kate McCollum had six digs, Tara Roberts five kills and Molly DiRuzza and Sydnie Garber each added four kills.

AU (11-11, 1-4 HCAC) hosts Franklin on Thursday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast from O.C. Lewis Gymnasium at 7 p.m.

Yellow Jackets beat Ravens in HCAC volleyball match

volleyball2The Anderson University volleyball team lost to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Defiance College in three games on Wednesday night in Defiance, Ohio. The scores were 25-18, 27-25 and 25-20.

Carol Weatherford led the Ravens with 14 kills, four digs and Kate McCollum had nine kills and nine digs.

Taylor Cox had 33 assists, seven digs and Molly DiRuzza had six kills and six digs. Caitlin Morency added 12 digs and Sydie Garber five kill and three blocks. Allee Donaghy chipped in with six digs and Tara Roberts two kills and three digs.

AU (11-10, 1-3 HCAC) travels to HCAC rival Mt St. Joseph next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Molly DiRuzza led the Ravens with 12 kills, eight digs and Kate McCollum and Tara Roberts had 10 kills  and 21 digs each. Taylor Cox had 39 assists, 10 digs and Caitlin Morency had 25 digs.

AU (11-9, 1-2 HCAC) travels to Defiance on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
