Jasmine Lee, 18, and her two younger sisters would fight all the time when she still lived at home, but when it came to the love and compassion the sisters had for each other, they would do anything for each other.

“We’ve had to stick kind of close because there’s no immediate family out here,” the Anderson University student said.

Not only are they close to each other and their parents, but Lee said that spending time with her family makes her a happier person.

Jacqueline is a freshman at AU this year from Butte, Mont. Her sister Laura, a junior education major, played a role in Jacqueline coming to AU. "Since Laura left two years ago, I realized how much I want to be near her, " explained Jacqueline.

Anderson University sophomore Jordan Mathis didn’t have the time Tuesday morning to stop and chat. That’s because it was the first day of classes, and he was in a hurry to get there.

“It’s great to be back; I’m excited,” said Mathis, 19, as he walked briskly across campus. “I love it here.”

The entire campus was buzzing — alarm clocks could be heard emanating from dorm rooms — with activity Tuesday morning, as students headed to class for the first time this academic year.

Dr. Scott Borders appears at first glance to be full of contradictions. Students who get to know him realize that in fact, he is. He is an Alabaman who has lived in Indiana for 30 years. He is a Southerner who speaks and walks faster than any Northerner. He is wonderfully unpredictable as a professor, but a very stable community member. He doesn’t write recreationally, but he is a talented storyteller. His past is influenced by Southern culture, his family, and past mentors, but Borders is an original who has a strong influence on all students and faculty who work with him.
