In creating work for the Conservatory exhibit, AU art+design majors became interested in the irony of talking about nature housed in an artificial green space. They also found themselves wondering “How do we make something about nature with a non-natural material, glass?” [Photo on left: Glass student Kameron Robinson prepares his exhibit pieces.]

For senior Kenton Pratt, the focus became the mysterious absence of animals. His piece in the show is an installation of bird cages … which are empty. “I kept thinking, maybe there should be birds here, but if there were, the would be caged.” Birds also played a role for Stephanie Cochran, whose inspiration for the exhibit came from Bauer Birds, who gather colored trash to make wild, fantastical nests. “These birds are collectors, and what they do is kind of like what artists do,” she shared.

Senior Kameron Robinson, on the other hand, found himself asking, “How can I enhance the space without reproducing it?” He was drawn to the bold, vertical lines of the lady palm trees in the Conservatory and created mirrored, organic shapes which help magnify their fascinating textures and shapes. Because of their mirrored quality, his pieces allow viewers to examine not only the plants but also their own presence in the Conservatory space.

Also included in the exhibition is work by alum Davin Ebanks (BA ‘98), as well as a collaborative piece by AU glass professor, Arlon Bayliss, and students from his Introduction to Glass course.

One of the unique features of the exhibition is its collaborative nature. Bayliss, and Brent Cole, associate glass professor at Ball State, began plans for the project last spring. As next-door neighbors in the world of glass, both schools’ programs have much to gain from the kind of collaboration this exhibition offers. “Working together enables us to do bigger things,” Cochran explains, “this show wouldn’t have happened without the help we were able to give each other.”

Collaborating with a public venue also gave students a taste for the demands of a professional exhibition. Similar to the off-campus experiences of other majors, exhibitions provide art+design students the opportunity to go out into the community and envision where they might fit in the professional world. Robinson said, “Although I gained some exhibition experience during my internship this summer, this was my first public exhibition, and I was glad to go though it together with other undergrads.”

Built in 1914 by German architect George Edward Kessler, Garfield Park Conservatory houses 10,000 square feet of beautiful, historic plants from tropical regions throughout the world. It also hosts changing educational displays and three spectacular seasonal shows each year — no small undertaking. Through Neo Natural, students have been able to bring greater public awareness to the institution. According to Stephanie Cochran, “Part of the calling of artists is to bring awareness to the beauty in our community, and this is one way to do that.”

The website presents in-depth information on each academic major including visual examples from student portfolios in six studio disciplines. Special opportunities, courses of study, and graduate profiles help prospective students know what to expect within each major. Detailed faculty profiles along with portfolios of professional work provides a look into recent studio activities by each faculty member. An expanded Wilson Galleries section features a detailed look at the upcoming exhibition season as well as images of past exhibitions.

Current faculty and students along with alumni may find the resources and calendar of events sections useful with information on department events and contacts for internships and materials suppliers.

“I am excited to have our department more fully represented within the larger university site,” said Kevin Rudynski, department chair for Art + Design. “With the addition of the visual portfolio sections, we’ve added the ’show’ to the ‘tell’ which is crucial for a visual arts program. We expect that the new site will serve as both as a beacon for individuals searching to study the visual arts at a Christian liberal arts university and a resource for current students and visual arts professionals.”

Stefanie Leiter in the Office of University Communications served as the team leader on the project with Meredith Christopfel, a 2009 Art + Design alumna, and Rudynski. The redesigned website was developed in conjunction with Brainstorm, an Indianapolis firm, which has served as a partner with the university since 1998.

“As a recent graduate, it’s been a joy and honor to work on this website project for the Department of Art + Design,” said Christopfel. “As a student, I was a committed art major; now, as an alumna, I remain a loyal fan. It feels really great to work for an organization I believe in, and to give back to a community that has invested so much in both my personal and professional development.”

The Performance Hall and Galleries project is a part of the $110 million Dreams. Discovery. Direction. campaign for Anderson University. The campaign is the largest fundraising effort in the university’s history. To date the campaign has raised $97 million. Major components of the campaign include $51 million for capital projects, $34 million for endowment, and $25 million for operational support.

“We are so grateful for the commitment and support of the York family,” said Bob Coffman, vice president for advancement at Anderson University. “This new facility will provide a world-class environment in which our students and faculty will perform. Through their generosity, Dr. James and Dr. Elizabeth York are making a significant difference in the lives our students.”

Dr. James and Dr. Elizabeth York have given of their time and resources to make a difference in people’s lives. Their giving spirit was what convinced the couple that Dr. James York should retire early from his practice of orthopedic surgery so that they could work in mission hospitals throughout Africa. It also prompted them to contribute to the Harry L. and Henrietta Harp Endowed Memorial Fund at Anderson University. And it is one of the primary reasons they created the James M. York, M.D., and Elizabeth H. York Endowed Scholarship Fund through the Anderson University School of Theology.  The Yorks also provided resources for the York Seminary Village project at AU and the York Children’s Book Collection within the Nicholson Library.

The architectural firm of KRM in Anderson is designing the project. Contractors managing the 18-month construction of the facility — targeted to begin in early summer 2011 — will be announced at a later date pending a further review and evaluation of project costs and projected gift income by the Executive Committee of the AU board of trustees.

It is anticipated that the new facility will support a permanent gallery space for the Warner Sallman Art Collection at Anderson University as well as an additional gallery space for other specialized art collections owned by the institution. The Performance Hall and Galleries project is designed to be an acoustically superior venue that will give proper recognition to the work of students, faculty members, and guest artists. The architectural and acoustical design of the facility will enhance the nationally recognized programs of the School of Music. The hall will be carefully constructed and shaped to ensure that music is heard and experienced in powerful and moving ways.

“This is a project that we have been anticipating for a long time that we feel will have a significant impact on the growth and development of the School of Music,” said Dr. Jeff Wright, dean of the School of Music at Anderson University. “All of us in the School of Music are very excited about the impact that the performance hall will have on our work and the development of students.”

The Performance Hall and Galleries project will feature orchestra space for 45 musicians, a choir loft for 75 voices, and an advanced acoustical design. The main floor of the facility will accommodate approximately 250 seats while the balcony space will support approximately 75 seats. A large lobby with glass walls will provide natural light and wide views of campus — providing an ideal setting for greeting guests and hosting receptions.

The School of Music is one of the largest and strongest academic units on the campus of Anderson University. Graduates perform in some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including The Metropolitan Opera in New York City and La Scala Theatre in Milan. Graduates are also teaching in some of the strongest school systems in the nation, leading music ministries in important churches, sharing their artistic vision through all facets of the music industry, and pursuing graduate degrees from prominent universities.

“As a performing artist, I understand the importance of a performance hall in creating a venue where the expression of art can be realized,” said Lawrence Brownlee, a 1996 alumnus of Anderson University and a world renowned bel canto tenor. “It also provides an intimate space where the acoustics and atmosphere contribute to an experience that both listeners and performers can enjoy. For those students who will go on to have performing careers, it is vital for them to understand the setting in which their performances will take place. The performance hall has many possibilities, and I am sure it will benefit the Anderson community in countless ways.”

All current Anderson University music students and alumni share one thing in common. They perform as soloists and as members of musical ensembles during their years at AU. Each week, the School of Music hosts multiple performances that showcase the artistry of student musicians. In addition, the School of Music presents performances by faculty members and guest artists, many of whom are featured in a special Thursday Night Concert Series which attracts significant audiences from the campus and community. In short, the School of Music boasts an active performance calendar that will be supported by the new performance hall.

Betsy Barnum graduated from AU in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and completed a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2006. In 2007, she received a $10,000 grant to fund the creation of her own work, which later toured the Midwest. She currently resides in Seattle, Wash., where she rents a studio to create her own work and also rents space at a printmaking shop to teach etching workshops. Barnum’s experiences include participating in exhibitions and showing her work across the United States and in Canada.

Barnum credits Anderson University for contributing to her success. “I learned valuable career, writing, and communication skills which continue to be invaluable as a practicing artist,” said Barnum. AU allowed her to integrate her love for art with her interests in writing and history. From this, she “received the basis of learning how to see, write, and communicate as an artist and as an intelligent person.”

Barnum’s exhibition pieces included work completed from 2008 through August 2010. The inspiration for most of these pieces came from her daily life and various experiences. She particularly enjoys patterns, which were displayed in her small bird and figure pieces at the gallery. Those pieces took two to three hours to complete and allowed her to experiment with composition. “All of the work is a type of narrative that explores my daily life and emotional struggles,” said Barnum. “The pieces themselves are meant to evoke a singular moment or feeling, and then work with the others in the series to form the deeper story of life.”

Trent Miller earned a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Boston University after graduating from AU in 1999 with a degree in visual arts. After graduate school, he began teaching art at various schools and is currently at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. His exhibition experience includes many group and solo exhibitions over the years in various cities.

The Anderson University exhibition was his first show conducting critiques and giving an artist’s talk, where an artist simply presents different pieces to the audience and discusses the meanings behind them. “I’ve done each of these things, but not all at the same time, so this extended kind of visit is a first for me,” Miller said.

AU played a role in helping Miller become an artist outside of the university setting. “I would especially like to point to the continued help from Professor Kathleen Dugan,” he said. “It was her encouragement at AU and in years to come that convinced me I could actually be a working artist.”

Miller looked to interesting outside sources to influence some of his exhibition pieces; although, he stated that it’s not always about the inspiration. “For me, it’s about getting into the studio every day and working, working, working. When you do this, good things will happen,” Miller said. All of his pieces took between one month and one year to complete. Three of the featured pieces at the exhibition were Oh Philip, referencing the painter Philip Guston; INRI, a mix of transfiguration and crucifixion paintings found in the Russian Icon painting tradition; and The Burial of Andrei Tarkovsky, a tribute to the Russian filmmaker of the same name. “Each of these three pieces pays homage to someone or something that I hold dear,” Miller said.

David Schnuckel graduated from AU in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. He then completed his Master of Fine Arts at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y. He worked with the Kokomo Opalescent Glass production studio and taught as an adjunct professor within the art department at Alfred University in New York. He currently resides in Rochester and is a visiting assistant faculty member at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Schnuckel is continually developing his own work and showing it both nationally and internationally. His first solo exhibition was this past summer in Brooklyn, N.Y. It was well accepted and reviewed in an international glass publication that has opened the door for more exhibitions in the near future. One thing Schnuckel appreciates about AU’s Art and Design department is its emphasis on writing. In his professional career, he has had to submit many written pieces.

“Being introduced to the rigors of using the written word to analyze personal thought, opinion, and observation early on has made a lot of the scholarly aspects of being a professional artist and educator that much easier,” he said. It also gives him a professional edge when applying for jobs, receiving grants, and seeking gallery representation.

The pieces Schnuckel chose to display for the Visiting Artist’s Exhibition were also used for his solo exhibition over the summer. “It’s a body of work that investigates the use of imagery and the written word within a sculptural context,” he said. “It reinterprets the historical practice of glass painting and portraiture in what I think is both personally and contemporarily relevant.”

Some of the pieces took only a few days to create while others took several weeks. All of the pieces in his showcase served as a reevaluation of “personal mishap and misjudgment,” meaning he took old discarded glass and turned it into something with “renewed vitality and purpose.” This served as the tying bind between all of the pieces in his collection.

The three artists featured at the exhibition have different mediums, techniques, and artistic processes, and the diversity represented in their works demonstrates the variety of opportunity that AU’s Art and Design department has to offer.

According to exhibit information, the word “identity” is thus split into two: “id,” the part of the personality dealing with basic drives, and “entity,” that which we are. When the two combine into art, they form an “identity.”

The show opened Saturday, April 10 in the Wilson Gallery of the Fine Arts Building [Campus Map and Directions].

 Works by 11 art and design seniors will be on display until at least the first of May and possibly until graduation.

The artists are Caryn Creviston, Rachel Matthews, Kathryn Morton, Austin Anderson, Marcus Deal, Talia Richardson, Jennilyn Geyer, Jenny Jung, Mandy Coplin, Leanne Miller, and Will Johnson.

AU’s Art and Design Department offers a variety of media from which students can choose, including glass, painting, and sculpture. And each student’s satisfaction in his or her art is unique.

“I think it’s specific for each person,” said Coplin, a Highland graduate, during an interview at Wilson Gallery.

Coplin’s concentration is in visual communication design. “For me, I don’t feel like my design actually happens when I’m printing something out, but more when I’m coming up with the whole concept.”

As opposed to Coplin, whose work involves graphic design, typography, illustration and computer-assisted design, senior Caryn Creviston of Carmel is an old-school sculptor.

“I have a huge respect for all of the 2-D artists and graphic design people,” Creviston said, “because I am totally clueless when it comes to that.”

Creviston, whose works have been adapted into cast aluminum and ceramics, has been focusing on autobiographical works, in keeping with the exhibit’s theme.

“I have five pieces in the show,” Creviston said. “They are all self-portraits. Two of them, in fact, have music.”

Muncie’s Austin Anderson, a Delta graduate, is also in visual communication design. Anderson first does his illustrations, then transfers them into a computer for manipulation.

“A lot of what I do is based in digital media,” Anderson said when asked about the differences between computer art and hands-on media like sculpture or glass.

“We’ve actually talked a lot about that in some classes. With hand-printed materials, there’s more of an experience that goes along with actually physically doing the work, as opposed to having the computer do the work for you.”

“I always enjoyed drawing, like in church,” said Leanne Miller of Pendleton, also a visual communication design senior. “When I was a kid, I’d always be scribbling.”

Miller, who grew up on the family farm, was not convinced she could translate her interest into a practical career.

“After high school, I tried several different jobs and didn’t go to college right away,” said Miller, who works in hand-printed images and screen printing. “Then I was, like, ‘Well, this isn’t for me. What do I really want to do?’ I realized that graphic design would probably be a good fit for me.”

Her fellow artists shared Miller’s concerns about employment post-recession.

Coplin, for example, said she wasn’t concerned so much about which medium to work in as she was her ultimate goal.

“I’ve been working a lot on design as a means of service for small businesses and for nonprofit businesses,” Coplin said. “It’s the client that matters to me.”

“One of my goals is to work with poster production as far as advertising musical performances and bands,” Anderson said. “As for immediately after school, I’d just like to get into any kind of job I can get.”

“My dream job would probably be working on stationery and printing it by hand,” Miller said. “But just getting a job at this point is a goal.”

“I’m not going to be focused on trying to find the perfect career in the art world,” Creviston said. “When I graduate, I’m going to find a job to support myself right away, but I will always do art, even if it’s just for myself.”

One of the most important criteria in selecting artwork for Åland stamps is that the subject have some connection to the Åland Islands. The Head of Christ stamp is no exception as Sallman’s father, Elias, emigrated to the United States from Åland in 1886.

Joshua Cook: Miles Design

Joshua Cook, recent graduate with a degree in Visual Communication Design, is interning at Miles Design, a graphic design firm in Indianapolis. “In the two months I’ve been working here, I have observed an unbelievable amount about visual design and operating a business,” said Cook.

“The most valuable aspect to my internship has been the collaboration with the other designers. It has been such a privilege working beside some of Indianapolis’ finest visual designers. There is a reason that Miles Design consistently puts out excellent work and it’s because they are passionate about visual design and the role it plays in our daily lives. It has been really exciting to be a part of that passion.”

Josh Miles, Principal and Founder of Miles Design, said, “Joshua Cook has been an all around solid performer. We’ve just extended his internship beyond the INvision program to go the rest of this summer.” Cook has accepted a job at Miles Design and will begin working there full time when he finishes his internship in September.

Bryan Smith: Clarian Health

Bryan Smith, an AU senior majoring in Accounting, is interning in the Human Resources department of Clarian Health in Indianapolis. “I have spent weeks compiling and analyzing invoice data from the division’s accounts payable system and am currently researching the best practice to audit the data that we have accumulated,” said Smith. “My next responsibility will be the implementation of a new internal control to make Clarian’s A.P. department operate more efficiently.”

In addition to the practical experience of producing and presenting reports, Smith says that he has learned a lot about how to make a “solid business case” for projects needing executive approval. “I am learning a great deal from the main aspect of my project which is procurement, contract, and vendor management and I hope to learn more in the coming weeks about how to audit and control these functions.”

Josh Novak: Buchanan Counseling Center and Community Hospital

Josh Novak, a Psychology major and rising senior, is completing two internships this summer—one at Buchanan Counseling Center at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and one at Community Hospital in Anderson. “I am learning so much from these internships that will help me in my future,” said Novak.

Novak said that he hopes to learn more about what it looks like to run a counseling center and learn the behind-the-scenes aspects of counseling. “More importantly to my experience, however,” said Novak, “is that I get to sit in with the counselors and their clients in some counseling sessions. I also attend conferences, staff meetings, case studies, and continuing education classes.”

Todd Baden: OneAmerica

Todd Baden, a senior Accounting major, is completing an internship at OneAmerica in Indianapolis. He performs internal audits to improve OneAmerica as a whole. “I help plan audit objectives, but my main responsibilities are to gather the necessary information, analyze the data and then draw the appropriate conclusions and recommendations.”

Baden said that the most valuable aspect of his internship has been the hands on experience. “I don’t make copies or do donut runs. I am treated like a full time employee, which is the best way to learn,” said Todd.

“Carrie exemplifies the scholar/leader who is committed to academic excellence, international travel and education, public service, as well as campus and community leadership,” said Joel Shrock, Director of Center for Public Service. “Carrie’s record of accomplishments is beyond impressive, it is dazzling.”

Through each international experience, Thomas learned it was possible to pursue her career outside the traditional American public school system. Along with a strong interest in European culture, Thomas started her international teaching journey at Anderson University by serving on the licensing feasibility committee for adding the English as a New Language Program. She will be receiving a certification in English as a New Language.

“Dr. Nelson encouraged me to think about applying for the Fulbright Scholarship during an international politics class I took in the fall of my junior year,” said Thomas. Thomas started the application process after accepting a position at Dubravushka Boarding School in Obninsk, Russian Federation, as an English Language teacher for students ages 5-17.

Most recently, Thomas was a student teacher in Vienna, Austria, this past semester at the Danube International School. She student taught English A and English as a Second Language, in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme for grades 6-10.

“Both Russia and Austria were different opportunities and experiences,” said Thomas. “In Russia, teaching was more difficult because I had few resources and little structure with which to work. In Vienna, I had more support and was paired with a great collaborating teacher as opposed to teaching on my own. I think teaching on my own first was a more backwards approach but one that served as a great opportunity.” [Pictured right in Vienna.]

Thomas’ award is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Her responsibilities will include teaching English as a foreign language at Gymnasium Jura Hronca (Grammar and Secondary High School) in Bratislava, Slovakia. She will also work on conducting some independent research on language teaching and the education system of Slovakia.

Thomas is graduating May 9 with a 4.0 GPA and is a Presidential Scholar, Sigma Tau Delta (English Honors Society) 2007-08 president, Kappa Delti Pi (Education Honors Society) 2007-08 secretary, AU International Education Committee member, AU English as a New Language Committee member and Athletic Committee member. Thomas also started her own Carrie Thomas Youth in Philanthropy Endowed Fund through the Hendricks Community Foundation which provides grants to youth organizations and is a member of AU’s Women’s Golf Team.

She is the only AU English major to have received the Recognition of Excellence for her PRAXIS II English Language, Literature, and Composition exam. This honor is earned by scoring in the top 15 percent of candidates nationwide who took the test in the past five years.

“Carrie is best described as an ambitious academician, intellectually courageous, highly admired by faculty and students, always considerate of the needs of others, and one who works well with people of all ages and backgrounds,” said Dean of the School of Education Diana Ross. “She has been an outstanding student leader at Anderson University.” [Pictured left in Slovakia.]

Thomas’ grant starts in the fall of 2009 and will last 10 months. She plans to start graduate work in the future on comparative and international education along with second language acquisition.

“It is amazing how God places people in your life at the right time and right place,” said Thomas. “ God has blessed me with opportunities like Tri-S, ENL and people like Dr. Nelson, Dr. Shrock, and Dr. Ross who have helped shape and guide my future plans.”

The senior art exhibition opening will be April 4 from 2-5 p.m. at 919 E 8th St., Anderson, Ind. This event is free and open to the general public.

This spring’s exhibition features 18 art and design students, their work representing all disciplines of the program. “We believe that ‘Converge’ not only acts as an invitation to the community to interact with our work, but also reflects the way in which we have come together to form this group,” says Allison Vander Naald, a visual communication design major from Villa Park, Ill. “Our learning has been dependent upon who we’ve been next to, and as we engage in this exhibition, we are reminded that our interactions as students have been essential to our work within this program.”

The senior exhibition, which will have an opening reception on April 4, from 2-5 p.m. is located at 919 E. Eighth Street in the former Anderson Rent-A-Center. “It’s been a lot of work to transition an old showroom into a gallery, but it’s been quite a meaningful process,” says Cara Camp, a fine arts studio: glass major from Parchment, Mich. “We had a blank canvas to work with, and by painting, building walls and giving the space some much-needed attention, it’s become a great home for our exhibition.”

The senior art and design students have met weekly since January in a seminar-style course that brings the students together to accomplish this work as a team. But the group isn’t just putting the finishing touches on their work and building a gallery space, they’ve been working just as diligently to finish their senior papers—a written exploration of their visual work that is supported by research, commentary and critical response. The topics are as varied as the work is, but one thing is certain: these students are exploring questions and ideas that they have a passion for.

“There are times that as Art and Design students we are misunderstood because of the tremendous amount of time we devote to our work. Some people don’t understand that this isn’t work that you can simply finish in the library,” says Dane Benton, a visual communication design major from St. James, Mo. “But our hope is that when people come and see the work, or come and listen to our thesis presentations, that they’ll understand why we’re so committed to what we do. We aren’t forced into doing any of this—we do it because we love it.”

During commencement, Anderson University will award four honorary degrees. Anderson University will award Rev. Emory Williams (distinguished Church of God minister) with an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree, Billy Jo Hall (longtime member of the Anderson University Board of Trustees and investment advisor at LPL Financial Services in Mount Sterling, Ky.) with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, Thomas J. Snyder (president of Ivy Tech Community College) with the honorary Doctor of Laws degree and Bobbette Snyder (executive director of the Madison County Leadership Academy) with the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

Other events scheduled on Anderson University’s May 9 commencement day include the Falls School of Business hooding ceremony at 11:30 a.m. in Byrum Hall for candidates of both Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Business Administration degrees.

The hooding ceremony for the Master of Education and the Master of Music Education will be conducted at 12 noon on May 9 in Shield dining room, Olt Student Center. The certification ceremony for the Teach in Indiana Program (TIP) will be conducted in Decker Hall, room 133, at 11:30 a.m.

Events earlier in the week associated with commencement weekend include the School of Theology Senior Recognition and Awards Chapel on Tuesday, April 28, at 11 a.m. E.D.T. in Miller Chapel. On Friday, May 8, at 6 p.m. E.D.T. the hooding ceremony for the Doctor of Ministry graduates will take place at Miller Chapel / Tallen Hall in the SOT. In addition, a special pinning ceremony for the Anderson University School of Nursing will be conducted on Friday, May 8 at 6 p.m. in Byrum Hall.

Dr. Carl Caldwell is a 1966 graduate of Anderson University and is the fifth chief academic officer in Anderson University’s 91-year history. Caldwell’s responsibilities have focused on the development of Anderson University programs, faculty and strategic planning. Before coming to Anderson University, Caldwell served as vice president for administration, vice president for academic affairs, and dean of the college at Franklin College in Franklin, Ind.

Caldwell received a master of arts in history from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and a doctorate in history from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. He has completed individual research and study seminars at Oxford University in England, as well as in Israel, Syria, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen Arab Republic.

In addition to having held several teaching assignments, Caldwell has also lectured on Middle East history, political structures and policies. His administrative positions have included associate dean for academic affairs at Manchester College in North Manchester, Ind., and dean for academic affairs at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va.

In November of 2002, Caldwell received the national Chief Academic Officers Award from the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). The award, delivered at the Institute for Chief Academic Officers, is annually presented to an individual who advances academic excellence at private colleges and universities. It is one of the Council’s highest honors for exemplary academic leadership. He has been a member of the Chief Academic Officers (CAO) Task Force, a frequent speaker at CIC’s Institute for Chief Academic Officers, and a mentor to new CAOs.

In October of 2008, Dr. Caldwell announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2008-09 academic year from a distinguished career of 38 years in academic and administrative leadership. He has served at Anderson University since the spring of 1996.

Caldwell and his wife, Carolyn, a 1964 graduate of Anderson University, have two sons and four grandchildren. Following retirement, the Caldwells will continue to serve in full time positions at the American University of Iraq – Sulaimani.

Dr. Kerry Robinson is the senior pastor of East Side Church of God, in Anderson, Ind., a congregation he has served since December 1996. East Side Church is located near the campus of Anderson University and Church of God Ministries, Inc. and is widely recognized for its mission to “Lift up Jesus Christ so that people may Discover Hope for Life.” As the primary speaker for East Side Church of God, Dr. Robinson shares passionately to groups of various sizes in diverse settings in an effort to help individuals discover the hope of Jesus Christ.

Prior to his current assignment, Dr. Robinson was the Senior Pastor of White Chapel Church of God and President of Warner Christian Academy in Daytona Beach (1992-1996) and Senior Pastor of Scott Memorial Church of God, Chattanooga, TN (1983-1992).

Dr. Robinson is a graduate of Anderson University, Anderson School of Theology, and has done postgraduate work at Emory University in Atlanta. He is a graduate of Beeson Divinity School at Samford University in Birmingham, AL., with a Doctor of Ministry Degree. Dr. Robinson has served in leadership for the Church of God at the state, regional, and national levels.

“Calliope” is designed to provide a very festive yet intimate atmosphere where the viewer is encouraged to sit on Menchinger’s furniture, and have a close experience with Bayliss’ small works on paper.

Bayliss’ pictures are composed for the viewer’s entertainment and designed for the viewer’s reconsideration. Bayliss wants the pictures to never settle to one concrete experience. This means the pictures are continuously transforming and changing content before the viewer’s eye. He hopes that as soon as the viewer reads the painting one way, another way of reading the painting presents itself to the viewer. His paintings are playful, and he hopes that the viewer has an enjoyable experience.

Menchinger designs furniture that is functional and beautiful with a focus on craftsmanship and concern for how the furniture will contribute to its environment. He is inspired by wood in its natural form and tries to bring out the natural beauty of the wood. He also designs furniture intended to be cheaply mass produced, hoping to make high quality furniture that is affordable. With a focus on functional furniture, he welcomes viewers to experience the craft of his objects through using them.

The glass wall separates screened from unscreened passengers and incorporates simplified chevron shapes made from dichroic glass to resemble a flock of sparkling birds. These elements create delicately colored light as both natural and artificial light plays across them, and the colors shift and change as viewers pass the wall. The imagery calls to mind the joy and freedom inherent in experiencing flight.

Bayliss received his B.A. in Ceramics (1st class with honors) from Bristol Polytechnic in England in 1978 and his M.A. in Glass from the Royal College of Art in 1981. As an independent artist in England, he designed glass for Rosenthal Glas und Porzellan in Germany, for E.O.S. Toscany in Italy, for Stephens and Williams Royal Brierly Crystal and Wedgwood Glass in England, and at the Snogebaek Glashytte in Denmark. Since 1990 Bayliss has been a professor of art and the director of the glass program at Anderson University.

Mary Jo Kramb Bayliss was born in Ventura, California in 1962; however, she grew up on the East Coast. She received her BFA in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995, and her MFA in sculpture from University of Colorado, Boulder in 1999. She has shown her work in South America and across the United States. Her three sons are Matthew (23), Daniel (22) and Sam (15).

Bayliss’ public projects include sculptures for Anderson University, the City of Anderson and the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library in Indianapolis. In 1993 he designed the annual Governor’s Arts Award for the state of Indiana. Bayliss is an elected Diploma Member of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers.

Although precise numbers are not available until the third full week of classes (week of September 22), the university is projecting an increase of 12-15 percent for first-time freshman over last year.  Within this year’s enrollment are approximately 600 new undergraduate students and a total undergraduate population of roughly 1,850 students.  The AU undergraduate student population includes persons from more than 30 international countries and 47 states.

Approximately 80 percent of new undergraduate students at Anderson University come from Indiana and contiguous states and represent nearly 60 religious denominations.  The average high school grade point average of new undergraduate AU students is 3.4 with 30 percent falling in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class.  The top five individual majors among new AU undergraduate students are Education, Business, Music, Communication and Nursing.

Her 11-year-old twins, who were diagnosed with autism eight years ago, had been suspended from school a few days earlier.

Hannah, annoyed that vocabulary study was going to interrupt her reading, threw a dry erase board, which accidentally struck another child. Ed threw a chair when two kids he’d been working with wanted to put a label at the top of a map instead of the bottom.

Now, Dugan’s pair of fifth-graders lurched up and down the hallway at the Indianapolis Art Center. Hannah, wearing pink Crocs, brown cords, and a lilac T-shirt and cardigan, was blinking excessively. Ed, in a blue polo shirt, jeans and Nikes, was putting his hands up to his face. Both bit their bottom lips and stared at the floor as often as they looked up at their own portraits on the wall.

Dugan, a 47-year-old associate professor of art at Anderson University, stood still, finally, after rushing to arrive for the reception for her exhibition, “Facing Autism.”

To Dugan, it feels as if she’s always running late, always struggling to keep it together.

A DVD of an earlier interview played in the background, where the artist described her work, attesting to her children’s battle against the fastest-growing disability in the country, the words “problem” and “so hard” echoing through the gallery.

“You have these stretches where they’re functioning pretty well. You think maybe we can do this,” Dugan said. “But then you hit a bad stretch, and it rears itself up, and they tantrum—you’ve never heard such screaming—and you think, ‘How am I going to cope with this?’ ”

Twenty years ago—when Dustin Hoffman gave his Oscar-winning performance in “Rain Man”—autism was diagnosed nationally at a rate of roughly 1 in 2,000.

Today, the rate is 1 in 150.

Better recognition, shifting diagnostic rules and expansion of the autism spectrum itself are part of the growth, but there is also an alarming increase in incidence, and the medical system is struggling to keep up.

When Hannah and Ed were diagnosed in 2000, all doctors and educators could tell Dugan was to go to Riley Hospital for Children, even though the wait for a first appointment could last 12 months. Now, the wait is roughly four months, at what is now known as the Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center, an outpatient center that started as a much smaller facility in 1997.

“It was two people,” said Dr. David Posey, chief of the clinic. “Now, we have a staff of 21. But we could use more providers.”

Dugan soon found she would not only have to educate herself about autism, but educate people in the education field, as well.

“The challenge with children with autism is that there’s never one way of doing things,” said Dr. Cathy Pratt, director of the Indiana Resource Center for Autism. “What works with one child may not be what the next child needs.”

And the public still has a poor sense of what autism means.

Art is Dugan’s way of combating this ignorance. Using blunt brush strokes in bold colors, she portrays the world according to children with autism—a world that is frightening and nonsensical—showing the difficulties they face and the dignity they possess.

“If you’re a parent of a child on the spectrum, you become an activist by default,” said Dugan’s husband, Mark Tourney. “Most of what has been done has been done by parents.”

Dugan said that what she’s done is to paint the beauty of suffering.

But the pain isn’t on the canvas. The kids there are happy. Perhaps uncomfortable, or bewildered, but not in pain.

The suffering is in the artist.

Things used to be easier.

In the late ’70s and early ’80s, Dugan was a young Hoosier in Bloomington, caught up in the modern art scene, graduating from Indiana University with a BA and BFA, then heading to New York for a summer art program at Queens College. Before long, she was on her way to Yale for an intense MFA program.

She eventually returned with her husband to Indiana, where she received grants and awards throughout the region. She worked at Marian College and Franklin College and took a role in the art department at Anderson University in 1992.

But an art career is hard enough to pursue, said Tourney, let alone with twins who have autism.

Dugan poured her frustration into her art, and that was possible only after a Lilly Scholars Grant she received through the university. The grant allowed her to spend the past three years painting and putting together a symposium, featuring Posey, Pratt and Susan Pieples, president of the Autism Society of Indiana. It was held at the arts center in April, Autism Awareness Month, before an audience of about 80, including parents and professionals. Dugan donated her honorarium to cover the food.

“My art provides me with the respite I need when I have no control,” said Dugan, “and my faith helps me to understand that the control I seek is not mine to orchestrate.”

Dugan accepts that Ed can figure out the surface area of a cylinder but can’t make regular eye contact; that Hannah can speed-read and comprehend books at a 12th-grade level but can barely keep up with a conversation among her peers.

“I started to come to the realization that it’s a journey,” said Dugan, as Ed lay down on a bench and Hannah snuggled into her mother’s side. “It’s not going to be fixed. It’s long-term.”

It’s bittersweet, too.

Dugan recently had to separate Ed and Hannah. They were bickering in the yard. Ed was pretending to drill for oil. Hannah was chastising him for contributing to global warming. Such scenes are difficult to deal with even as they are a joy.

Even the suspensions from school wrought some tenderness.

Ed, as they were driving from school, sensed his mother’s unhappiness and said, “Mom, I’m really sorry. I know I’m messing up your day.” Hannah made her own gesture, giving Dugan her Mother’s Day present—a scented candle made in an after-school program—early.

“They do have empathy,” said Dugan, “for those they love.”

And that can be seen in the paintings.

Dugan requires you to deal directly with the subjects, and the subject at hand.

Ed averts his gaze, yes. Hannah, too, looks down and away.

But they do that when they’re happy.

Summer school students also have the opportunity to select offerings such as reading courses of assigned textbooks, journals and research documents; flexible online study; tutorial courses which regularly meet with an arranged instructor; or special Tri-S courses that provide academic credit through study abroad.

“Summer school is an opportunity for students to get ahead or catch up on graduation requirements. Thousands of people still hustled to find their seats in Ward Fieldhouse as the color guard presented the flags to begin the ceremony.

Friends and family members of all ages, dressed in all kinds of attire, sat among each other for the joyous day—to celebrate the graduation of the university’s class of 2008.

The ceremony hasn’t changed much over the years, said sisters Nicole Fischer, 26, and Kate Lintondo, 31.

The two women sat with their grandparents in the audience as their mother, Katrinna Fischer, 49, received her master’s degree in teaching.

Katrinna Fischer teaches at Eastside Elementary School in Anderson. Her family has sat through several commencement ceremonies at Anderson University as other family members have graduated: Nicole; Kate; Kate’s husband; and Katrinna.

“We just like education,” said Nicole, who is now in law school.

Katrinna Fischer earned her bachelor’s degree from Anderson University not too long before she started the graduate program. Next year, she’ll start at Ball State University to earn her doctorate.

“She’s excited,” Kate Lintondo said. “She’s looking forward to it.”

All of the graduates, and their teachers, seemed excited for the future.

Commencement speaker James T. Morris, who was given an honorary doctor of law degree, said he was told this group of students was the most prepared class for public service from the university.

“The world is eager for you to make your mark, to do what you can,” he said.

Morris, executive director for the United Nations World Food Programme, talked about Myanmar and the world’s efforts to help the country, which was recently hit with a disastrous cyclone. He also spoke about efforts to eradicate world hunger and help the children of the world.

“Spending time on a team of people, seeking a common cause for a common good, that is the most rewarding experience that a human being can have,” Morris said. “This is a Christian university. This is a university with global outreach. … The practical application of our faith, whether you’re Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist, brings us together in a common ground.”

Coming together is how the world will rid itself of hunger, Morris said.

“You never feel so good about yourself with someone else working for someone else,” he said. “Leadership and being an effective person is about seeing your calling in its biggest context.”

The joyous occasion ended as most do—some were laughing and some were crying, but all were ready to go on to another adventure.

“When my twins were diagnosed with autism in 2000, at age 3, there was very little information available,” said Dugan. “I was fortunate to meet some very knowledgeable people through an autism support group. With one in every 126 children being diagnosed in the state of Indiana, the need for support is growing.”

The symposium offers three sessions designed for parents and family of children diagnosed with Autism and Aspergers, educators and therapists. Cathy Pratt from the Indiana Resource Center for Autism will host “Teaching Alternative Behaviors” at 9 a.m. “Neurobiology and Pharmacological treatment of Autism” will be hosted by Dr. David Posey from the Riley Autism Clinic at 10 a.m. Susan Pieples from the Autism Society of Indiana will speak on “Parenting outside the box – possibilities for our children’s futures” at 11 a.m. After lunch there will be a panel featuring parents of Autistic spectrum children, ranging in age from preschool to adult.

“I conceived of this symposium in conjunction with my art exhibit at the Indianapolis Art Center as a means of offering support, information, and awareness about autism. I was awarded the Lilly Scholars Grant through Anderson University to make this exhibit and symposium a reality,” said Dugan.

“It is important for people to understand that this disorder doesn’t go away; there is no cure. These children are going to grow up to become adults. If we provide intervention early on, we can assist these children to become functioning members of society.”

Students in the Falls School of Business will have a new choice in major beginning in the fall of 2008. The Falls School of Business will be offering a Global Business major beginning with the next catalog year. The 65-credit hour major also requires students to enroll in at least six hours of international experience to be approved by the dean and take additional hours of a foreign language.

“Anderson University, by tradition, is internationally focused,” said Terry Truitt, dean of the Falls School of Business. “Strong programs like Tri-S, our foreign language department, and AU-East Africa show the University’s broad reach… The global mindset isn’t something new; we are just building on our strengths.”

The Department of Communication Arts has undergone extensive restructuring in this new catalog. Communication Arts majors now have the option to specialize in Audio/Video/Cinema Production, Broadcast Journalism, Journalism and Public Relations. The department also offers opportunities for practical experiences seldom seen at the undergraduate level.

Donald Boggs, chair of the Department of Communication Arts, said, “Communication media have changed dramatically since our Mass Communication major was created in 1977 and we have restructured the department and the major to reflect the changes. The Internet and other factors have brought a ‘convergence’ of media and specialized media. Meeting the needs of niche audiences will represent the future of communication.”

Through the Federal National Professional Development grant, the ENL program is now able to provide students with an ENL license, training educators to assist English language learners in the classroom.

The ENL program helps educators serve the needs of English language learners, gain cross-cultural understanding and experience hybrid classes with face-to-face and online work. Ryan Weiss, Assistant to the Director said, “New teachers often face a challenge in teaching LEP students. We give teachers the tools and instruments to overcome these obstacles.”

AU will award James T. Morris with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree and Phyllis R. Naylor with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

Other events scheduled on Anderson University’s May 10 commencement day include the Falls School of Business hooding ceremony at 11:30 a.m. in Byrum Hall for candidates of both Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Business Administration degrees. In addition, the hooding ceremony for the School of Education will also be conducted at 12 noon on May 10 (as well as the certification ceremony for the Teach in Indiana Program–TIP) in Schield dining room of the Olt Student Center.

Earlier events associated with commencement weekend include the School of Theology Senior Recognition and Awards Chapel on Tuesday, April 29, at 11 a.m. EDT in Miller Chapel. In addition, a special pinning ceremony for the Anderson University School of Nursing will be conducted on Friday, May 9 at 6 p.m. in Byrum Hall.

James T. Morris serves as Special Advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and President for Pacers Sports and Entertainment. Before joining the Pacers, Morris spent five years as the Executive Director for the United Nations World Food Programme. As head of WFP, Morris oversaw the world’s largest food aid organization, with more than 12,000 staff members, 90 percent of whom work in the developing world.

In July 2002, Morris was appointed UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Special Envoy for Humanitarian Needs in Southern Africa, a region which continues to be gripped by a major food emergency. In 2003, he successfully guided the World Food Programme in carrying out the largest humanitarian operation in history, feeding 27 million Iraqis.

After serving six years in city government in Indianapolis, Ind., Morris moved to the Lilly Endowment, Inc. in 1973. He served as president for six years until 1989. Morris then became chairman and chief executive officer of IWC Resources Corporation and Indianapolis Water Company.

While serving in these leadership roles and on several corporate boards, Morris has carved time out of this already busy schedule for volunteer activities. He was affiliated with the United States Olympic Committee as treasurer and as chairman of the audit and ethics committee, was a member of the Board of Governors of the American Red Cross, and was chairman of the Board of Trustees of Indiana University. He has contributed time and guidance to many civic and community organizations.

Phyllis R. Naylor, author of the 1992 Newbery Medal winner Shiloh, was born in Anderson, Ind. She wrote her first book in kindergarten and sold her first story at age 16 for $4.67. Before she started writing full-time in 1960, Naylor worked as a teacher and editor. Since she sold her first children’s book in 1965, she has written 136 books for children and adults.

Shiloh is the story of an 11-year-old Marty Preston who chances upon a mistreated beagle pup in his hometown of Friendly, West Virginia. Marty is not prepared for the ethical questions he has to face. Should he return the dog to its owner, only to have the animal abused again? Should he tell his parents? Should he steal food to help the poor creature? Marty’s efforts to cope with these questions provides the moral backbone for this story, which is presented in a language and manner that will be understood by third- and fourth-grade readers.

Kimberly Majeski grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated from college with a degree in Political Science. After serving on the staff of a United States Congressman and two state representatives including the Speaker of the House and the Majority Floor Leader, Majeski received a call from God to preach. She immediately began preparing and studying for what has now become her life’s work.

Majeski served on the pastoral staff of the Trinity First Church of God in Nashville, Tennessee and also served as the Director of Education for the Cumberland Crisis Pregnancy Center where she enjoyed an extensive speaking ministry taking the message of truth and purity to many churches, women’s events and to over 13,000 young people in the public school system.

Majeski was ordained in 2000 and earned her Master of Divinity in 2003 from Anderson University School of Theology while serving as a Ministry Coordinator in the national offices of Women of the Church of God. During her career, she has served as a conference speaker, women’s retreat leader, Bible teacher, and pastor, She is married to Kevin Majeski and the two now live in Anderson, Indiana where Kimberly is the campus pastor of Anderson University.

Three years prior to the 2006-07 academic school year, AU started meeting about an Honors Program through a development committee. With the program (made possible through a grant from Lilly Endowment), came planning, surveys to current students and alumni, curriculum intentions, and many other factors to create such a program for the university.

“We wanted a cohort of committed Christians who wanted to excel in learning, who were leaders in the community and knew how to represent AU’s campus,” said Dr. David Murphy, professor of History an co-director of the Honors Program. “We believe in combining our goals of intellectual and social learning in keeping with our mission to the program and AU.”

From the “Christian ideals” of the program it states the following: Anderson University is committed to the highest ideals of Christian higher education. As an integral part of that commitment, the Honors Program seeks to prepare students of demonstrated achievement for leadership in a range of fields of endeavor. Within this context, our scholars will be challenged to cultivate the life of the spirit, maturing in the virtues of integrity, justice, and generosity.

Dr. Carl Caldwell, vice president for Academic Affairs, nominated and appointed members to the committee to organize such a venture for incoming students. Committee members met to determine the desire and structure for such a program thus beginning the research and contact with other colleges in preparation for the program launch.

“We feel as though we learned from these other colleges and received feedback into how to structure and create such a program,” said Murphy. “For instance, we wanted to integrate these students with others on campus through dorm life and classes. Many other colleges have separate living quarters for honors students but we felt an overwhelming urge not to create such a lifestyle.”

Vivian Coffman, who works in the Center of Public Service (CPS) office and part-time for the Honors Program, appointed two upper classmen mentors, from CPS, to work with the cohort students. In addition, 2004 alum Erin Coffman and two other colleagues helped lead orientation sessions in adjusting to college life as a student and leader (curriculum from a youth leadership development program where she works in Washington D.C.)

“Because we did not have other honor students on campus we felt it was important to have upper classmen serving as mentors to these students and to see a familiar face when in the honors office,” said Vivian Coffman.

Rebecca Nelson, one of the first students to enter the program from Oak Lawn, Ill., felt that the three-day orientation program served the Honors Students in more ways than one.

“With arriving four days earlier on campus to adjust being away from home then coming into the honors orientation with three youth leadership experts, helped ease my anxiety coming into college,” said Nelson.

“I feel our roll in being mentors to these students is that they will use our mentorship how they see fit,” said senior Stephen Hawkins. “To let them know we [with sophomore mentor Lauren Roller] are people they can come to if they have problems, need questions answered, and to help them transition to college is important.”

Through CPS, Tri-S, SGA, and many other organizations on campus, Dr. Janice Fulkerson, associate professor of Education and co-director of the Honors Program, looks to these students as being future leaders on campus and in the community.

“We hope each year to have more and more applicants to the program and to have these students become ambassadors for the program in their hometowns and when talking to students and community members,” said Fulkerson.

“Retention is a huge factor for this program,” said Murphy. “We need to keep the brightest and best students in Indiana and in doing so need to create a program with a strong sense of belonging, which I think we have accomplished this year with our first group.”

Upon successful completion of 23 credit hours (one class per semester) over four years that will stand for and meet 17 liberal art credit requirements, students will receive special recognition at commencement, and on their transcripts and diploma.
