AU prof to use multilingual skills for medical interpretation

Inge Baird, assistant professor of German and Spanish at Anderson University, recently found a new way to exercise her multilingual talents. Fluent in German, Portuguese, and Spanish, Baird was interested in finding ways to interpret outside of the classroom. She discovered Bridging the Gap, a cross-cultural healthcare program. In one week, Baird completed the course and received a certification in medical interpreting.

“I could be a translator, work with immigrants in the U.S., or work for a study abroad program,” said Gretchen Livingston, a sophomore at Anderson University majoring in Spanish, French, and international education. Her passion for foreign language and culture places her in the company of some of AU’s most gifted foreign language students.

AU faculty and staff have family ties

For some faculty and staff members at Anderson University, catching up with beloved family members is as simple as walking to the next office. Traditionally, AU has played host to generations of family members. The experience of some individuals at AU impacts their life in a way that influences family members to follow suit as students or staff members. Currently, AU employs three pairs of brothers who work in various departments on campus.

“Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere,” said Caleb Fietcher, “right behind Haiti.”

Fiechter, a senior at Anderson University, recently returned to Indiana after studying abroad six months in impoverished Nicaragua, located in Central America. Average temperatures of 95 degrees during the cooler, rainy season became normal for this Bluffton, Ind., native.

Anderson residents struggle to contact loved ones in Haiti after quake

Anderson University student Rousseau Luzincourt spent Wednesday in turmoil, trying to find news about his sister living in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He scoured news and Internet accounts, trying to see if he could recognize neighborhoods devastated by Tuesday’s earthquake.

Anderson University joins NetVUE as founding member

Anderson University (Anderson, Indiana) announced today that it has joined as a founding member the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE), a nationwide campus-supported network whose purpose is to expand and extend the intellectual and theological exploration of vocation on campuses. NetVUE is a new initiative of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), a national association of more than 600 independent, liberal arts colleges and universities.
