Russell named to All-HCAC basketball team

russellmikeAnderson University’s Mike Russell has been named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference team for the 2008-09 season on Tuesday.

Russell led the HCAC in scoring at 19.9 points per game and averaged 18 points per game overall. The senior also averaged 2.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

He is fourth on the career 3-pointers made list (139), eighth in career scoring average (16.6) and ninth in steals per game (1.52). Russell also is tied for the single game record with nine 3-pointers against Bluffton last year.

Junior Rodney Holliday and sophomores Gabe Miller and Andrew Jones were named All-HCAC Honorable Mention.

Jones was second on the team in scoring (11.1 ppg) and also averaged 3.4 rebounds per game. Holliday also averaged double figures (10.4 ppg) and was second in rebounding (3.9 rpg). Miller averaged six points per game and led the team in assists (83).

AU finished the season 15-12 overall and 7-9 in the HCAC, losing in the post-season tournament semifinal to eventual champion Transylvania.

Hot-shooting Transy downs AU men in HCAC semifinals

futlz_web2The Anderson University men’s basketball team lost to No. 1 seed and host Transylvania University 76-69 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament semifinals on Saturday night at the Beck Center in Lexington, Ky.

Andrew Jones led the Ravens with 15 points and five rebounds, hitting 6-of-10 shots from the field.

Jordan Wiseman and Ryan Fultz each had 15 points and five rebounds. Wiseman also had three assists, making 5-of-8 field goals and Fultz had four assists, hitting 4-of-6 shots.

Brock Morrison was also in double figures with 10 points and five rebounds. Mike Russell added seven points in his final game.

Transylvania shot 56 percent from the field and had more 3-pointers than 2-pointers. They finished 14-of-26 from behind the arc and 10-of-17 inside.

AU finished at 44 percent shooting, including 50 percent in the first half when it led 35-34. The Ravens made 6-of-20 from 3-point range and 15-of-19 from the free throw line.

The Ravens had a 28-25 advantage on the boards, including 11-5 on the offensive glass. The Pioneers had the edge in assists (16-13) and blocks (5-1), but the Ravens had the lead in turnovers (7-10), points off turnovers (17-3), steals (3-1), points in the paint (26-12), second chance points (12-8) and bench scoring (30-15).

The Ravens finished the season 15-12 overall and 7-9 in the HCAC.

Basketball teams travel to Transy for HCAC semifinals

athleticsThe Anderson University men’s and women’s basketball teams will both be in action on Friday afternoon in the semifinal round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament at the Beck Center in Lexington, Ky.

No. 2 seeded AU will play No. 3 Hanover in the second women’s semifinal at 4 p.m., and the No. 5 seeded men will play host and top-seed Transylvania at 8 p.m. The men’s game will be on the internet broadcast.

The Raven women beat Hanover twice during the regular season and finished 12-4 overall in HCAC play this season. They also had an eight-game win streak, which was the second longest in school history.

Mel Hawthorne leads the Ravens in scoring (16.7 ppg), rebounding (7.4 rpg) and blocks (50) and is second in assists (61) and steals (53). She also surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career against Kalamazoo on Feb. 14, and is the only Raven to ever accumulate 400 points, 50 assists, 50 blocks and 50 steals in the same season.

Kayla Martin is second in scoring (12.2 ppg) and third in rebounding (7 rpg) and also surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career earlier in the season. Martin was the conference MVP in 2007-08 and a three-time All-HCAC selection.

Tiffany Bowsher is third in scoring (9.5 ppg) and second in rebounding (7.3 rpg) and Mandy Seward leads the HCAC in assists (157) and steals (87). Seward broke the single season record for assists and is eight steals behind that season mark.

The championship game is on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The AU men lost twice to Transylvania in the regular season, including an 82-77 decision at the Beck Center and a 78-74 loss in Anderson. The Ravens finished 14-11 overall and 7-9 in conference play and defeated No. 4 Bluffton on Tuesday 62-47.

Mike Russell leads the Ravens and the HCAC in scoring (18.5 ppg) and is second in assists (75), blocks (12) and steals (37).

Andrew Jones is second in scoring (11 ppg) and Rodney Holliday also averages double figures (10.7 ppg). Jordan Wiseman is fourth in scoring (7.8 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding (5.4 rpg). Gabe Miller tops the team in assists (82).

The championship game is on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Ravens knock off Bluffton in HCAC tournament opener

mbasketball1The Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Bluffton University 62-47 in the first round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament on Tuesday night at Founders Hall in Bluffton, Ohio.

The victory sets up a semifinal match at top-seeded and regular season champion Transylvania on Saturday night at 8 p.m. The Pioneers (19-5, 13-3 HCAC) defeated the Ravens (15-11, 7-9 HCAC) twice in the regular season, including an 82-77 decision in Lexington, Ky.

Jordan Wiseman led the Ravens with 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists, hitting 5-of-6 shots from the field, including all three of his 3-point attempts. Mike Russell also had 13 points, hitting 6-of-10 field goals, including a 3-pointer.

Andrew Jones was also in double figures with 12 points, four rebounds and a team-high four assists. Gabe Miller added nine points, two rebounds, three assists and Rodney Holliday chipped in with eight points and three rebounds.

The Ravens shot 53 percent from the field, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range. Bluffton finished at just 33 percent shooting, including 8-of-27 from behind the arc.

The Beavers had a 29-26 advantage on the boards, but the Ravens had the edge in turnovers (8-15), points off turnovers (21-2), assists (13-9), steals (9-2) and points in the paint (26-16).

The Ravens scored the first six points of the game and led wire-to-wire in the contest. The led by as many as 12 points in the first half, including a 28-21 advantage at the half. The Beavers closed to as many as four points, but a 7-0 run pushed the lead back to 35-24 and the lead was never under five the rest of the way. AU led by as many as 17 points in the second half.

Transy spoils AU men’s senior day

russell_webThe Anderson University men’s basketball team lost to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season champion Transylvania University 78-74 on Saturday at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium on Senior Day.

Mike Russell led the Ravens with 17 points, including 13 in the first half. The senior hit 5-of-14 shots from the field and all four of his free throws, including three 3-pointers.

Brock Morrison had 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench in just 13 minutes, making 4-of-5 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers. Ty Riddle had 12 points off the bench, including four 3-pointers.

Andrew Jones added 10 points and Jordan Wiseman chipped in with seven points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Brandon Coffer had four points and a team-high five assists in his final home game.

AU shot 43 percent from the field, including 9-of-23 from 3-point range while Trany finished at 53 percent shooting and was also 9-of-23 from behind the arc.

The Ravens had a 36-30 advantage on the boards, including 15-7 on the offensive glass. AU also had the edge in assists (16-14), turnovers (13-15), points off turnovers (15-8), points in the paint (28-26) and bench scoring (34-13).

AU finishes the season 15-10 overall and 7-9 in the HCAC. They will be the No. 5 seed in the HCAC tournament and travel to No. 4 Bluffton on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Manchester handles AU men at O.C. Lewis Gym

coffer_webThe Anderson University men’s basketball team lost to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Manchester College 67-55 on Wednesday night at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.

Andrew Jones led the Ravens with 12 points, hitting 6-of-13 shots from the field.

Brock Morrison had a double-double off the bench, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes. Vincent Dupree added 10 points and three rebounds off the bench in 15 minutes, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Gabe Miller chipped in with nine points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals and Mike Russell had a team-high four assists.

Anderson shot 34 percent from the field compared to 48 percent for Manchester. The Spartans made 6-of-12 from 3-point range while the Ravens were 5-of-23 from behind the arc.

Manchester had a 39-37 advantage on the boards, but AU had a 15-9 edge on the offensive glass. The Ravens also had the lead in turnovers (11-15), points off turnovers (16-13), second chance points (17-6) and steals (7-5).

AU (14-10, 7-8 HCAC) hosts Transylvania on Saturday. The game will be carried live on WQME 98.7 FM and the internet broadcast from O.C. Lewis Gymnasium at 4 p.m.

AU men fall at Bluffton in another overtime contest

mbasketballFor the second time this season, Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foes Anderson University and Bluffton University needed an extra five minutes to decide the winner.

And for the second time it was the host school coming away with the victory as the Beavers defeated the Ravens 93-88 on Wednesday night at Founders Hall in Bluffton, Ohio. AU won the first meeting in Anderson 79-73 in overtime.

Rodney Holliday led the Ravens with 21 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, hitting 7-of-12 field goals and 7-of-8 free throws.

Ty Riddle came off the bench to score 18 points, hitting 6-of-10 shots from 3-point range. Mike Russell had 14 points and Jordan Wiseman and Andrew Jones were also in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Gabe Miller chipped in with eight points, six rebounds and five assists.

AU shot 46 percent from the field, including 13-of-32 from 3-point range and 15-of-17 from the free throw line. Bluffton finished at 57 percent shooting, including 14-of-23 in the second half and overtime.

The Ravens won the battle of the boards 35-28, including 16-6 on the offensive glass. The visitors had the advantage in assists (17-16) and second chance points (19-7), but the hosts had the edge in turnovers (14-16), steals (9-6) and points in the paint (48-34).

AU led for most of the second half, including 48-38 with just under eight minutes left, but the Beavers used a 23-10 run to take a 71-68 lead with less than 30 seconds.

A layup by Holliday and two free throws by Russell in the final 20 seconds tied the game and forced overtime.

The Ravens drew first blood in the overtime with a 3-pointer by Riddle, but the Beavers tied the game three more times with the final time being at 80-80 with just over two minutes left.

Bluffton took the lead for good on a layup at 82-80 and scored its last 11 points from the free throw line to seal the game.

AU (14-9, 7-7 HCAC) hosts Manchester next Wednesday. The game will be carried live on WQME 98.7 FM and the internet broadcast from O.C. Lewis Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

Short-handed Raven men fall at Defiance

morrison_webPlaying without a pair of starters, the Anderson University men’s basketball team lost at Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Defiance College 64-59 on Saturday at the Weaner Center in Defiance, Ohio.

HCAC leading scorer Mike Russell didn’t play in the game and second leading scorer Rodney Holliday was limited to a single point in the contest. Jordan Wiseman and Brandon Coffer also missed the game and Ryan Fultz was limited to just 11 minutes before retiring to the bench.

Andrew Jones led the Ravens with 19 points and six rebounds, hitting 7-of-14 shots and 5-of-8 free throws. Five of those caroms were on the offensive end.

Gabe Miller had 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals and Ty Riddle came off the bench to add 11 points and two steals in 33 minutes. Brock Morrison and Ryne Foster added seven and five points, respectively.

Defiance shot 50 percent from the field, including seven 3-pointers. AU finished at 38 percent shooting, including just 25 in the first half when it was outscored 30-21.

The Yellow Jackets also had the advantage in rebounds (34-32), but the Ravens had a 14-9 edge on the offensive glass. Defiance had the lead in assists (13-8) and steals (7-5), but AU had the advantage in turnovers (12-17), points off turnovers (17-9), second chance points (18-9) and bench scoring (23-22).

AU (14-8, 7-6 HCAC) travels to Bluffton on Wednesday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast at 7:30 p.m.

Engineers derail Raven men in overtime 83-77

foster_webThe Anderson University men’s basketball team lost to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Rose-Hulman 83-77 on Wednesday night in overtime at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Ravens were led by Mike Russell with 20 points, four assists and three steals, hitting 6-of-18 field goals and 7-of-8 free throws. Ryan Fultz had 13 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals off the bench.

Rodney Holliday was also in double figures with 11 points, two assists and two steals. Ryne Foster added seven points, five rebounds, two steals and Brandon Coffer nine points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

AU shot 40 percent from the field, including 47 percent in the first half when it led 33-27. The Ravens made 27-of-37 free throws, but only 2-of-14 from 3-point range. Rose-Hulman finished at 53 percent shooting, including 70 percent in the second half when it outscored the hosts 41-35. The Engineers were 3-of-6 in overtime compared to just 1-of-7 for the Ravens.

Rose-Hulman won the battle of the boards 41-33 and also had the advantage in assists (16-10), blocks (6-2) and points in the paint (44-38). However, AU had the edge in turnovers (15-22), points off turnovers (24-6) and steals (13-6).

The Ravens led through most of the first 25 minutes, including 48-36 with 14 minutes left in the game. Rose-Hulman used a 19-3 run over the next five minutes to take a 55-51 lead. The teams were tied at 57, 61 and 63 before the Ravens took a 68-64 lead with just over a minute remaining. Rose-Hulman scored the final four points of regulation to tie the game and Russell’s potential game-winner at the buzzer was blocked.

Rose-Hulman scored the first two points in overtime and never trailed as the game was tied for the 10th and final time at 70 with four minutes left. AU closed to within one point at 76-75, but that’s as close as it would be in the final two minutes.

AU (14-7, 7-5 HCAC) travels to Defiance on Saturday. The game will be carried live on the internet broadcast at 3 p.m.

Hanover hands AU men HCAC road defeat

holliday_webThe Anderson University men’s basketball team lost at Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Hanover College 83-78 on Saturday at Collier Arena in Hanover.

Mike Russell led the Ravens with 28 points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals, hitting 8-of-15 field goals, including five 3-pointers. Russell also made 7-of-9 free throws.

Ryne Foster had 11 points and three rebounds off the bench in 12 minutes and Andrew Jones added 10 points, including 6-of-7 free throws.

Ryan Fultz chipped in with nine points, four rebounds, two assists and Jordan Wiseman eight points and seven rebounds.

AU shot 47 percent from the field, including 56 percent in the first half when it trailed 41-40. The Ravens also made 10-of-24 from 3-point range and added 18-of-25 free throws.

Hanover finished at 54 percent shooting, including 57 in the second half. The Panthers made 10-of-19 from 3-point range and 15-of-22 from the free throw line.

Hanover had a 33-26 advantage on the boards, including 12-9 on the offensive glass. The Panthers also had the edge in assists (14-10) while the Ravens had the lead in turnovers (9-12).

AU (14-6, 7-4 HCAC) hosts Rose-Hulman on Wednesday at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium. The game will be carried live on WQME 98.7 FM and the internet broadcast at 7:30 p.m.
