Ravens sweep pair of New Jersey schools in softball

Mooreman_webThe Anderson University softball team swept a pair of games against New Jersey foes on Wednesday at the Osceola County Softball Complex, defeating Rowan 1-0 and William Paterson 7-6.

In the first game, Monica Crowe tossed a four-hit shutout against Rowan, striking out 10 with only two walks.

Megan Ream drove in the only run of the game in the fifth inning, scoring pinch-runner Devin Moorman. Katy Ogden singled to start the inning and moved to second on Megan Kruse’s walk. Moorman entered the game for Ogden at second base.

Ream and Odgen led the offense with two hits each in the game.

In the second game, the Ravens scored three runs in the seventh inning to rally from a 6-4 deficit.

Stephanie Atkins and Allie Hoover singled and Lys Hess drove in both runs with a double to rightfield. Ellen Thompson tripled to drive in Hess with the winning run.

Jami Delagrange and Thompson led the offense with four hits, two runs and one RBI each and Natalie Moorhouse added two hits and three RBI. Atkins chipped in with two hits.

Moorman earned the victory on the mound, allowing nine hits and three earned runs in 6.1 innings while walking four and striking out two. Crowe got the final two outs to earn the save.

AU (4-4) plays Illinois Wesleyan (3 p.m.) and Hope (5 p.m.) on Friday in Kissimmee, Fla.

St. Norbert, Ramapo hand softball team two losses

Crowe_webThe Anderson University softball team lost a pair of games on Tuesday at the Osceola County Softball Complex, falling to Ramapo 3-0 and St. Norbert 5-3.

In the opener, Ramapo’s Lyndsey Buehler threw a no-hitter, allowing just one base-runner on an error. Monica Crowe took the loss for the Ravens, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out 10 and walking three.

Against St. Norbert, Hannah Hirtzel led the offense with two hits and two RBI, including a double. Stephanie Atkins had a home run and Melanie Evans added two hits.

Devin Moorman was the losing pitcher, allowing 10 hits and three earned runs, striking out five and walking two.

AU (2-4) plays Rowan (1 p.m.) and William Paterson (3 p.m.) on Wednesday in Kissimmee, Fla.

Ravens splits softball twinbill against Staten Island, Kean

Delagrange_webThe Anderson University softball team defeated Staten Island 4-0, but lost the nightcap 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Fortune Road Softball Complex in Kissimmee, Fla.

In the first game, Monica Crowe threw a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit while striking out nine and walking one.

Johnna Rebenack led the offense with three hits and Natalie Moorhouse added two doubles and two RBI.

Stephanie Atkins, Megan Ream and Amy Wuestefeld each had a double as the Ravens outhit the Dolphins 11-1 in the contest.

In the second game, Devin Moorman took the loss on the mound, despite allowing just two hits and no earned runs while striking out one without a walk.

Kean scored both runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting two hits with the help of two Raven errors.

Rebenack led the offense with a hit and an RBI. Moorhouse added a hit and a run scored and Katy Ogden had the other Raven hit in the game.

AU (2-2) plays Ramapo (3 p.m.) and St. Norbert at the Osceola County Softball Complex on Tuesday in Kissimmee, Fla.

Softball team splits opening doubleheader in Florida

Dunbar_webThe Anderson University softball team lost to Simpson 3-2, but defeated Trinity Christian 7-0 on Saturday in the season opener at the Fortune Road Softball Complex in Kissimmee, Fla.

In the first game, Simpson scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally from a 2-0 deficit. Johnna Rebenack led the Ravens with two hits and an RBI and Lys Hess added a hit and an RBI.

Monica Crowe took the loss on the mound despite allowing just seven hits and two earned runs while striking out six and walking two.

In the second game, Bailey Dunbar led the offense with two home runs and three RBI. Katy Ogden had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and Rebenack had two hits. Stephanie Atkins added a home run.

Devin Moorman earned the victory on the mound, allowing three hits and no runs in the shutout, striking out six and walking two. Natalie Moorhouse pitched a perfect seventh inning, striking out one.

AU (1-1) plays Staten Island, N.Y., (3 p.m.) and Kean (5 p.m.) on Sunday in Kissimmee, Fla.

Raven softball opener canceled

softballThe Anderson University softball team’s season opener at Denison on Saturday has been canceled. The Ravens will open the season against Simpson on Mar. 13 in Kissimmee, Fla.

The games will be carried live on the internet broadcast from the Fortune Road Athletic Complex at 11 a.m.

Softball team selected 4th in HCAC poll

softballThe Anderson University softball team was picked to finish fourth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference pre-season coaches poll on Wednesday.

Defending champion Transylvania was selected first with 79 points and eight first-place votes. Bluffton was picked second (70) followed by Defiance (60), Anderson (49), Manchester (41), Rose-Hulman (38), Mt. St. Joseph (37), Franklin (18) and Hanover (13).

The Ravens finished 23-17 overall last year, including 9-7 in the HCAC. AU opens the 2010 season at Denison on Mar. 6 at 1 p.m.

Haines named HCAC softball MVP; Louzon 1st team

softballAnderson University senior Chelsie Haines has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive MVP for the 2009 softball season.

Haines batted .418 this season with five doubles, a triple, 12 home runs, 37 RBI and an .809 slugging percentage. Her 12 home runs set a new single season record, including one in the post-season HCAC tournament last weekend at Transylvania. It was the second consecutive season Haines has been on the HCAC team.

Junior Gretchen Louzon was also named to the 13-member first team as the designated hitter. She led the Ravens with a .429 average and also had six doubles, a triple and 15 RBI. On the mound, she was 9-6 with a 2.87 earned run average and 68 strikeouts. Louzon has been a three-time All-HCAC player for the Ravens.

The Ravens also had three 2nd Team selections – all freshmen. Outfielders Lys Hess, Shayla Hinchman and shortstop Johnna Rebenack were named to the 13-member team.

Hess was third on the team with a .356 average, seven doubles, a triple, two home runs, 17 RBI and seven stolen bases and Rebenack hit .310 this season with three doubles and a triple in the leadoff spot, also swiping 7-of-8 stolen bases. Hinchman finished at .300 with a pair of doubles and a team-high eight stolen bases.

Senior Julia Siefring was named honorable mention. The second baseman was tied for the team lead in doubles (7),  fourth in hitting (.339) and second in home runs (8).

AU finished the season 23-17 overall and 10-6 in the HCAC, finishing fourth at the post-season tournament.

Softball ends season in extra inning loss in HCAC

The Anderson University softball team lost its first two games in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament on Friday in Lexington, Ky.

The Ravens lost the opener to Transyvlania 5-4 and ended their season with a 6-5 defeat to Bluffton in eight innings.

Against Transy, Gretchen Louzon led the AU offense with two hits and Chelsie Haines and Megan Kruse each added a two-run homer.

Haines home run broke the single season record, which she was tied with DeAnn Edge at 11. The home run was the second of the season for Kruse.

Monica Crowe took the loss on the mound, despite allowing only two hits and no earned runs. Louzon pitched the final 3.2 innings in relief, allowing four hits and one run while striking out six without a walk.

Against Bluffton, Julia Siefring led the offense with two hits and an RBI and Kruse added a double and two RBI. Lauren Smith and Louzon each had a hit and an RBI.

Louzon tossed the first five innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs while striking out four without a walk.

AU finished the season 23-17 overall and 10-6 in the HCAC.

Manchester hands softball team two losses in finale

haines_webThe Anderson University softball team lost a pair of games to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Manchester College on Sunday at Raven Field in the regular season finale. The scores of the games were 6-4 and 3-1.

In the first game, AU outhit Manchester 8-4, but committed a pair of errors that led to three unearned runs.

Chelsie Haines led the Raven offense with two hits and two RBI, including  double. Shayla Hinchman had two hits, Lys Hess an RBI suicide squeeze and Lauren Smith a double.

Monica Crowe took the loss, despite allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out eight with one walk. Jessica Alsman allowed two hits and two runs while walking two with a strikeout in 2.2 innings of relief.

In the second game, Haines hit her 11th home run of the season, tying Deann Edge’s and Amie Flowers single season records. Allie Hoover added a pinch-hit double as the Ravens were limited to two hits.

Gretchen Louzon took the loss on the mound, despite not allowing an earned run. She allowed four hits while striking out two with one walk. Lauren Smith pitched two scoreless innings of relief, walking two with a strikeout.

AU (23-15, 10-6 HCAC) travels to regular season champion Transylvania on Friday for the first game of the HCAC post-season tournament at 10 a.m. The Ravens will be the No. 4 seed and play the host and top-seeded Pioneers.

Softball team splits with Huntington on Senior Day

lane_webThe Anderson University softball team split a pair of non-conference games on Saturday to Huntington College, losing the first game 4-0, but rebounding to take the second contest 3-2 on Senior Day.

In the first game, seniors Chelsie Haines and Kate Richards had the only two Raven hits in the game.

Jessica Alsman took the loss in the game, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out 10 and walking four.

In the second game, Haines hit the game-winning two run homer in the third inning to account for the final two runs of the game.

Lys Hess had an RBI suicide squeeze to account for the other RBI, driving in Julia Siefring, who had doubled. Siefring had a pair of doubles in the second contest.

Monica Crowe and Gretchen Louzon combined for the victory in the second game with the later getting the decision. Crowe allowed three hits and no earned runs in the first three innings and Louzon gave up only two hits over the final four frames.

Crowe struck out four batters without a walk and Louzon had two strikeouts annd two walks.

The Ravens also clinched a spot in the four-team Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament next Friday by virtue of Manchester and Mt. St. Joseph losing on Saturday in other conference games.

AU (23-13, 10-4 HCAC) hosts Manchester in the regular season finale on Sunday. The games will be carried live on the internet broadcast from Raven Park at 2 p.m.
