Haines named HCAC softball MVP; Louzon 1st team

softballAnderson University senior Chelsie Haines has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive MVP for the 2009 softball season.

Haines batted .418 this season with five doubles, a triple, 12 home runs, 37 RBI and an .809 slugging percentage. Her 12 home runs set a new single season record, including one in the post-season HCAC tournament last weekend at Transylvania. It was the second consecutive season Haines has been on the HCAC team.

Junior Gretchen Louzon was also named to the 13-member first team as the designated hitter. She led the Ravens with a .429 average and also had six doubles, a triple and 15 RBI. On the mound, she was 9-6 with a 2.87 earned run average and 68 strikeouts. Louzon has been a three-time All-HCAC player for the Ravens.

The Ravens also had three 2nd Team selections - all freshmen. Outfielders Lys Hess, Shayla Hinchman and shortstop Johnna Rebenack were named to the 13-member team.

Hess was third on the team with a .356 average, seven doubles, a triple, two home runs, 17 RBI and seven stolen bases and Rebenack hit .310 this season with three doubles and a triple in the leadoff spot, also swiping 7-of-8 stolen bases. Hinchman finished at .300 with a pair of doubles and a team-high eight stolen bases.

Senior Julia Siefring was named honorable mention. The second baseman was tied for the team lead in doubles (7),  fourth in hitting (.339) and second in home runs (8).

AU finished the season 23-17 overall and 10-6 in the HCAC, finishing fourth at the post-season tournament.

Softball ends season in extra inning loss in HCAC

The Anderson University softball team lost its first two games in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament on Friday in Lexington, Ky.

The Ravens lost the opener to Transyvlania 5-4 and ended their season with a 6-5 defeat to Bluffton in eight innings.

Against Transy, Gretchen Louzon led the AU offense with two hits and Chelsie Haines and Megan Kruse each added a two-run homer.

Haines home run broke the single season record, which she was tied with DeAnn Edge at 11. The home run was the second of the season for Kruse.

Monica Crowe took the loss on the mound, despite allowing only two hits and no earned runs. Louzon pitched the final 3.2 innings in relief, allowing four hits and one run while striking out six without a walk.

Against Bluffton, Julia Siefring led the offense with two hits and an RBI and Kruse added a double and two RBI. Lauren Smith and Louzon each had a hit and an RBI.

Louzon tossed the first five innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs while striking out four without a walk.

AU finished the season 23-17 overall and 10-6 in the HCAC.

Manchester hands softball team two losses in finale

haines_webThe Anderson University softball team lost a pair of games to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Manchester College on Sunday at Raven Field in the regular season finale. The scores of the games were 6-4 and 3-1.

In the first game, AU outhit Manchester 8-4, but committed a pair of errors that led to three unearned runs.

Chelsie Haines led the Raven offense with two hits and two RBI, including  double. Shayla Hinchman had two hits, Lys Hess an RBI suicide squeeze and Lauren Smith a double.

Monica Crowe took the loss, despite allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out eight with one walk. Jessica Alsman allowed two hits and two runs while walking two with a strikeout in 2.2 innings of relief.

In the second game, Haines hit her 11th home run of the season, tying Deann Edge’s and Amie Flowers single season records. Allie Hoover added a pinch-hit double as the Ravens were limited to two hits.

Gretchen Louzon took the loss on the mound, despite not allowing an earned run. She allowed four hits while striking out two with one walk. Lauren Smith pitched two scoreless innings of relief, walking two with a strikeout.

AU (23-15, 10-6 HCAC) travels to regular season champion Transylvania on Friday for the first game of the HCAC post-season tournament at 10 a.m. The Ravens will be the No. 4 seed and play the host and top-seeded Pioneers.

Softball team splits with Huntington on Senior Day

lane_webThe Anderson University softball team split a pair of non-conference games on Saturday to Huntington College, losing the first game 4-0, but rebounding to take the second contest 3-2 on Senior Day.

In the first game, seniors Chelsie Haines and Kate Richards had the only two Raven hits in the game.

Jessica Alsman took the loss in the game, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out 10 and walking four.

In the second game, Haines hit the game-winning two run homer in the third inning to account for the final two runs of the game.

Lys Hess had an RBI suicide squeeze to account for the other RBI, driving in Julia Siefring, who had doubled. Siefring had a pair of doubles in the second contest.

Monica Crowe and Gretchen Louzon combined for the victory in the second game with the later getting the decision. Crowe allowed three hits and no earned runs in the first three innings and Louzon gave up only two hits over the final four frames.

Crowe struck out four batters without a walk and Louzon had two strikeouts annd two walks.

The Ravens also clinched a spot in the four-team Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament next Friday by virtue of Manchester and Mt. St. Joseph losing on Saturday in other conference games.

AU (23-13, 10-4 HCAC) hosts Manchester in the regular season finale on Sunday. The games will be carried live on the internet broadcast from Raven Park at 2 p.m.

Ravens sweep softball doubleheader over Rose-Hulman

dunbar_web2The Anderson University softball team swept a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from Rose-Hulman on Friday at Raven Field. The Ravens won the first game 6-4 and finished off the nightcap 4-1.

In the first game, Chelsie Haines led the Raven offense with two hits and two RBI, including a home run. Johnna Rebenack added two hits, two runs and an RBI, including a double.

Gretchen Louzon chipped in with a pinch-hit RBI double and Stephanie Atkins an RBI triple.

Monica Crowe earned the victory on the mound, allowing three hits and three earned runs while striking out seven and walking six. Her fifth strikeout of the game broke the single season record of 98 set by Amber Hall in 2004.

Lauren Smith pitched the final two outs to earn her second save of the season.

In the second game, Julia Siefring led the AU offense with two hits, two runs and two RBI, including a home run. Smith and Atkins each had RBI doubles and Erin Garrity added a hit and a run.

Louzon earned the victory on the mound, allowing six hits and no earned runs while striking out two with one walk.

AU (22-12, 10-4 HCAC) hosts Huntington on Saturday for Senior Day at 1 p.m.

AU splits softball pair against No. 11 Ohio Northern

ohio_webThe Anderson University softball team split a doubleheader against NCAA Div. III No. 11-ranked Ohio Northern on Thursday in Ada, Ohio.

The Polar Bears won the first game 8-2, but the Ravens were victorious in the second contest 13-9.

In the first game, Chelsie Haines led the Ravens with three hits and two RBI, including a 250-foot home run.

Jessica Alsman took the loss, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out three with one walk. Monica Crowe allowed a hit and no earned runs in relief and Lauren Smith struck out three in her only inning of work on the mound.

In the second game, Julia Siefring led the offense with four hits, four runs and five RBI, including a pair of home runs. Smith had three hits, three RBI and Chelsie Haines had two hits, three runs and two RBI. Shayla Hinchman added two hits and a run.

Gretchen Louzon earned the victory on the mound, allowing eight hits and five earned runs while striking out two without a walk. Smith got the final out of the game to earn her first career save.

AU (20-12, 8-4 HCAC) hosts Rose-Hulman on Friday at 4 p.m.

Softball team splits final two games at Illinois Wesleyan

smith_webThe Anderson University softball team lost to Calvin 3-0, but rebounded to defeat Blackburn 6-2 in the fourth and final game at Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday in Bloomington, Ill.

Against Calvin, Kahley Barkes led the offense with three hits, including a double. Jessica Alsman took the loss on the mound, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out four and walking two.

Against Blackburn, Lauren Smith led the Ravens with four hits and three RBI, including a home run.

Shayla Hinchman had two hits, two runs and Kelly Rusterholz added two hits, an RBI and a stolen base. Allie Hoover chipped in with two hits and Ellen Thompson her first career home run.

Monica Crowe earned her 10th victory of the season, allowing five hits and one run while striking out eight with two walks.

AU (19-11, 8-4 HCAC) hosts Manchester on Tuesday. The games will be carried live on the internet broadcast at 3:30 p.m.

AU wins pair of softball games in Illinois

thompson_webThe Anderson University softball team defeated Fontbonne 8-3 and Hope 2-1 in a pair of games on Friday in Bloomington, Ill.

Against Fontbonne, Chelsie Haines led the Ravens with two hits, two runs and two RBI, including her seventh home run of the season.

Gretchen Louzon also had a pair of hits, including a double, and Julia Siefring and Sarah Wilbur each had RBI hits in the game.

Monica Crowe was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and three runs while striking out a career-high 14 batters with six walks. The 14 strikeouts were the second most in school history.

Against Hope, Siefring had a pair of hits and Lys Hess had a two-RBI single in the first inning to account for both AU runs. Johnna Rebenack added a hit and a run and Louzon added a hit.

Louzon earned the victory on the mound, allowing six hits and no earned runs while striking out seven without a walk.

AU (18-10) plays Calvin (2 p.m.) and Blackburn (4 p.m) in the final two games on Saturday in Bloomington, Ill.

Softball team splits pair with HCAC leader Bluffton

hinchman_webThe Anderson University softball team split a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Bluffton University on Thursday at Raven Park. The Beavers won the first game 5-1, but the Ravens were victorious in the second contest 5-3.

In the first game, Lys Hess led the Raven offense with two hits, including a double. Julia Siefring had an RBI hit and Johnna Rebenack added a hit and a run.

Gretchen Louzon took the loss, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out three and walking three.

In the second game, Louzon led the AU offense with two hits. Siefring and Chelsie Haines each added a home run and Stephanie Atkins a double and a run.

Jessica Alsman earned the victory, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out seven with five walks.

AU (16-10, 8-4 HCAC) travels to Illinois Wesleyan on Friday to play Fontbonne (noon) and Hope (6 p.m.).

rebenack_webThe Anderson University softball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Mt. St. Joseph on Saturday at Raven Field. The scores were 5-4 and 8-5.

In the first game, Chelsie Haines led the Raven offense with two hits, including a game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Shayla Hinchman and Julia Siefring had two hits and an RBI each, including a double by Siefring. Lys Hess added a double.

Gretchen Louzon earned the victory on the mound, allowing one hit in 2/3 an inning of relief. The junior also had the game-winning hit in the seventh inning, knocking in Siefring, who had doubled.

Jessica Alsman got a no decision on the mound, pitching the first 6 1/3 innings and allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out eight with four walks.

In the second game, Louzon had two hits and four RBI, including a double and three-run triple for the game-winning hit in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Hess had two hits and an RBI, including a home run, and Haines added two hits and an RBI.

Monica Crowe earned the victory on the mound, allowing nine hits and four runs while striking out seven and walking three in the complete game performance.

AU (15-9, 7-3 HCAC) hosts Rose-Hulman on Monday. The games will be carried live on the internet broadcast from Raven Field at 2 p.m.
