“We’re excited to make our fourth regional appearance in the national tournament,” said AU coach Tony Holloway. “Obviously, Linfield is a quality opponent and will be a challenge for our team. We feel we played one of the toughest schedules in the nation and that has prepared us for the challenge that lies ahead.”

The Ravens defeated Transylvania 2-0 in the first game to advance to the championship against Defiance. AU defeated Defiance 3-0 in the first championship game to force a winner-take-all contest.

“I’m so excited for our players,” said AU coach Tony Holloway. “To win a championship is one of our goals and it was a gutsy effort by our team today to win three games in 26 innings.”

In the final championship game, Katie Lee drove in the courtesy runner in the top of the 12th and Amy Wuestefeld followed with a double to plate Lee.

AU survived two innings when Defiance had the winning run on third with less than two outs in the bottom of the 9th and 10th frames.

“Give our kids a lot of credit in those situations,” said Holloway. “We never gave up and kept fighting and battling and it paid off. We had some great pitching and key defensive plays to keep them from winning the game in those extra innings.”

Lauren Smith earned the victory on the mound, allowing four hits and no earned runs in eight innings of relief. Devin Moorman tossed the first four innings, allowing six hits and two runs.

Kourtney Allender led the offense with three hits and an RBI and Wuestefeld and Lee added two hits and an RBI.

Allie Hoover had two hits and Megan Kruse added a two-RBI single.

In the first championship game against Defiance, Wuestefeld led the Ravens with two hits and two RBI, including a home run. Lee had two hits, two runs and Katy Odgen added a RBI single.

Monica Crowe tossed a complete game to earn the victory, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out three.

In the first game of the day against Transylvania, Crowe also tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out four.

“Monica has been our leader on the pitching staff the whole year and she was just outstanding today,” said Holloway. “To throw two complete game shutouts back-to-back against that caliber of offense was unbelievable. In was a team effort from the pitching staff as we got four good innings out of Devin and eight innings of shutout relief by Lauren.”

Natalie Moorhouse led the offense with two hits and Wuestefeld and Hoover added RBI singles.

Moorhouse, Crowe, Wuestefeld, Lee and Stephanie Atkins were all named to the 2011 HCAC All-Tournament Team on Saturday.

The title was the sixth HCAC post-season tournament championship for the Ravens. They also won the title in 1994, 1996, 1997, 2000 and 2007.

AU (28-13) advances to the NCAA National tournament next Thursday. The NCAA tournament selection show is scheduled for noon on Monday.

The score of the first game was 11-10 and the second contest 10-9.

“Those were two big wins against the No. 4 team in the nation,” said AU coach Tony Holloway. “We trailed in both games, but we never gave up and kept fighting. DePauw is a quality team that has been one of the best teams in the country the past decade.”

In the first game, AU led 8-5 after six innings, but the Tigers plated five runs in the top of the frame to take a two-run lead. Kourtney Allender walked, Natalie Moorhouse singled and Katy Ogden was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Lys Hess doubled home all three runs with a ball of the rightfield fence for the game winner.

“Lys has been hitting the ball well all season and she went with the pitch and drove it to rightfield,” said Holloway of Hess, who finished with two hits and three RBI in the game. “Allender and Ogden both had big at-bats to get on base and Natalie’s single gave Lys a chance to win the game.”

Lauren Smith led the offense with three hits, three RBI and two runs, including a 3-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to give the Ravens an 8-5 lead. Megan Kruse had two hits, two runs and three RBI, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Katie Lee added two hits, two runs and Moorhouse chipped in with two hits.

Monica Crowe earned the victory, allowing 11 hits and seven runs while striking out six with five walks.

In the second game, AU trailed 7-1 after three innings before making its second comeback of the day. Lee drove in a run with a single and Amy Wuestefeld added a two-RBI double to cut the deficit to 7-4. Michelle Brooks singled, Wuestefeld singled and Moorhouse doubled in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-6 and Crowe had a pinch-hit triple to tie the game going into the seventh inning.

After DePauw got two runs to take its second two-run lead of the day into the bottom of the seventh, Stephanie Atkins singled to open the last frame. Smith singled and Kruse followed with a three-run homer to right-center field for the game-winner.

Wuestefeld led the Ravens with three hits and two RBI, including a double. Moorhouse also had three hits, including a pair of doubles and Smith added three hits as well. Atkins had two hits, two runs and Kruse added the home run and three RBI.

“Megan has been in a slump the first part of this season, but we’ve really been working on her swing and she has put in a lot of time,” said Holloway. “I was glad to see all that work pay off today and hopefully she has found her swing again and will continue to hit that way this weekend. We have two big conference games as Defiance on Saturday and we need to keep swinging the bats like we have been.”

Smith earned the victory on the mound, allowing 11 hits and three runs in 5.2 innings of relief.

AU (13-9, 3-1 HCAC) travels to HCAC leader Defiance College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
