The highest honor given annually to a business faculty member active in the Christian Business Faculty Association (CBFA) is the Richard C. Chewning Award. The 2009 award recipient of the Richard C. Chewning Award is Dr. Doyle Lucas, DBA Program director and professor of management at the Falls School of Business at Anderson University. This award, sponsored by the ServiceMaster Corporation was presented at the 2009 Annual Conference of the CBFA at John Brown University on October 15-17.

Lucas, through his leadership in CBFA, as a published scholar in his discipline of management, and as the director of the Doctor of Business Administration program at Anderson University has made a significant contribution to advance the biblical integration in the study and practice of business. He has excelled in “discovery, integration, application, and teaching” through his research, service, and teaching at the undergraduate, MBA, and DBA levels. For thousands of students over the years, he has been their example of what it means to be “salt and light” as a business professional.

Additionally, in the last eight years, his service has directly impacted the lives of more than 100 doctoral students and graduates currently serving in Christian institutions across the United States and Canada. These students and graduates consider Lucas to be their mentor and example for a life of biblical integration, Christian servanthood, and professional excellence. Through his work with the DBA students, he has contributed to a significant increase in the scholarly productivity of faculty from CBFA institutions in professional conferences, papers, and articles.

The Chewning Award was established by the Christian Business Faculty Association (CBFA) to perpetuate the passion and commitment of integrating personal faith and business as modeled by Dr. Richard C. Chewning, faculty emeritus at Baylor University.

The Falls School of Business (FSB) at Anderson University unveiled a new dynamic Web site today, Tuesday, Sept. 1. The new site, www.anderson.edu/falls, offers a distinctive new design that is easier to navigate while providing informative features on a variety of areas such as the undergraduate, MBA, and DBA programs along with new areas for current and prospective students, admissions, parents, and alumni.

“AU offers a rich, educational experience,” said Terry Truitt, dean of the Falls School of Business. “The new Web site for the Falls School of Business is a bright, open window that showcases the high-impact, cutting-edge programs that are changing students’ lives.”

In addition to reorganizing information from the former FSB Web site, the new site also adds new pages including experiential learning opportunities; degree requirements; an in-depth look at the history of the FSB and faculty; and an FSB news, events, and testimonials section. Visually, the site graphics, embedded videos, color, and photography help guide users to learn more about the FSB.

According to Chris Williams, director of university communications, this second major Web site development for the Falls School of Business has brought tremendous growth in the communication technologies used on the site.

“We attempt to incorporate new tools into the site allowing users to more easily share content and keep up to date with the School of Business. The new FSB Web site provides more opportunity to reach out to students, alumni, and prospective students, and helps the university lift its profile,” Williams said.

The 18-month redesign process was directed by Stefanie Leiter, web content manager, along with Mike Wiese, professor of marketing.

“The new Web site is an essential step in Anderson University boldly sharing the unique story of the Falls School of Business,” said Wiese. “The Web site reflects a new level of connectivity between the FSB, prospective students, current students, and alumni. In the future, the Web site will be an important hub for information, relationships, and learning.”

“The completion of the new redesign is successful due to the attention to detail, teamwork, and dedication between the FSB and University Communications,” said Leiter. “While still focusing on the user, we are excited for the FSB with the extent of what the site brings to all constituents.”

The mission of the Falls School of Business is to create an environment that will enable and encourage graduates to be professionally competent, ethically sensitive, and informed by the Christian ideal of servanthood. This mission is realized through a commitment to teaching excellence and genuine concern for each individual student, and is supported by a faculty commitment to continuous professional development and service to the community.

The redesigned Web site was developed in conjunction with Brainstorm, an Indianapolis firm, which has served as a partner with the university since 1998. The new site can be accessed at www.anderson.edu/falls.

Anderson University is a private Christian university of 2,800 undergraduate and graduate students in central Indiana. The school is accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and is a member of the Christian Business Faculty Association (CBFA).

U.S. News and World Report has again ranked Anderson University among the best universities in the Midwest offering master’s level degree programs. Institutions in this category offer a full range of both undergraduate and master’s level degree programs. The magazine’s 2010 guide to “America’s Best Colleges” marks the sixth consecutive year that Anderson University has been listed among the best in its class.

“We are pleased to be listed among the top schools in our category,” said Dr. James L. Edwards, president of Anderson University. “Universities that are achieving their mission especially in these very challenging times deserve this recognition and we are proud to be among them. When a student finds the right college of quality that is an excellent fit in terms of culture, programs and degrees, and overall mission, the future opens in such powerful ways, and for that student, the selected school is the best in the nation. We intend to be such a school for so many.”

The 2010 America’s Best Colleges package provides the most thorough examination of how more than 1,400 accredited four-year schools compare on a set of 15 widely accepted indicators of excellence. Among the many factors weighed in determining the rankings, the key measures of quality are: peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving, and graduation rate performance (National Universities and Liberal Art Colleges).

Over the past 26 years, the U.S. News college rankings, which groups schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, has grown to be the most comprehensive research tool for students and parents considering higher education opportunities. The America’s Best Colleges ranking package, which includes extensive editorial content and multimedia resources, has helped families navigate the difficult decisions involved throughout the college process, from college admission and selection to financing options.

The exclusive rankings, which include more than 1,400 schools nationwide, are available today at www.usnews.com/colleges, will also be published in the September issue of the U.S.News & World Report magazine, on newsstands starting August 20.

During his 40 years at Anderson University, Barry Callen served as a professor, college dean, and seminary dean at the School of Theology.

If that wasn’t enough to keep busy, he found time to become a published author of 34 non-fiction books.

Now retired, Callen recently wrote his first historic novel titled “In Deep Water, An Historical Novel of Violence and Virtue, Fear and Death.”

The book is published by Emeth Press and chronicles the fictional life of Merchant Marine Christopher “Rope” McCord, captain of the submarine Barracuda during World War II.

“In Deep Water” takes an in-depth look at the consequences of war and draws parallels to faith and beliefs between the 1940s and today.

“They called Capt. McCord ‘Rope’ because he tied the crew together or he could hang you,” Callen explained. “Nearly everyone in the book has a nickname.”

Characters drawn from real life

Like many works of fiction, Callen based his characters on people he has known.

The author came up with Capt. McCord after hearing his own father tell World War II stories. “Rope” is fictional but based on his father’s experience in World War II.

His father, Robert Christopher Callen, was a Mechant Marine in the war serving as a carpenter aboard a Liberty Ship. He survived a German U-boat torpedo attack. The combat veteran passed away at the age of 55 in 1974.

“I relived the war in my father’s shoes,” Callen said. “I always heard about the war through my father and watched all of the movies and documentaries I could on submarine warfare. I was very well prepared to write this book.”

Though the fictional Capt. Christopher McCord honorably wears a uniform in World War II, his brother Chuckie is a conscientious objector who serves his country by working in a Pearl Harbor hospital.

McCord survives the war unscathed, but Chuckie meets his fate while caring for soldiers in need.

God’s mysterious ways

“If God is God, then where is He on a day so rotten?” Callen said. “In war there are no winners, just lucky survivors.”

While enroute to help survivors of the sinking USS Indianapolis, McCord chooses instead to settle his submarine on the ocean’s floor to tend to an ailing member of his crew. A medic aboard the Baracuda performed an emergency appendectomy on the man that saved his life.

“Captain McCord saved one of his own men instead of assisting 1,000 men on the Indianapolis,” Callen said. “He chose to save one life over 1,000. How could you live with that decision?”

Though “In Deep Water” takes place in the 1940’s, Callen believes the story has relevance today.

“I did not set this novel in Afghanistan or Iraq or try to make a political statement,” Callen explained. “However, the reader can draw their own conclusion.”

When Callen was in his senior year at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Penn., he was a student teacher at Beaver Falls High School.

He remembers a student who kept his head down in class and very seldom looked Callen’s way. The perceived “underachiever” was none other than Joe Namath who led the New York Jets to a Super Bowl Championship in 1969.

“One of the characters in the book is ‘Hollywood’ Joe DeMont,” Callen acknowledged. “I based DeMont on Namath who has lived an interesting life. I remember Namath doing nothing academically, but he lived to play football.

“DeMont is a free spirit like Namath, but he finds redemption in the book. I often wonder if Namath has settled down or if he would be interested in reading this book to see the similarities between himself and DeMont?”

More to write about

With over 30 books to his credit, Callen shows no signs of slowing down. He is currently working on the history of Christian ministry to AIDS orphans in southern and eastern Africa, and a second novel on religious extremism in modern culture.

He has five grandchildren. One son, Todd, lives in Anderson and teaches English at Northside.

Callen enjoys writing in the quiet solitude of his eastside Anderson home that he shares with his wife, Jan. However, he can be found every morning at a nearby Starbucks typing on his laptop.

“That is how I start my day,” Callen said. “I’m at Starbucks for about 30 minutes every morning editing and writing stories. Writers never know when they are going to come up with a good idea for their book. I am not sure how many napkins I have scribbled on during my career as a writer.”

Some notes on Barry Callen

- Books Barry Callen is reading:

“Posterity: Letters of Great Americans to Their Children” by Dorie McCullough Lawson

“The Last Undercover: The True Story of an FBI Agent’s Dangerous Dance With Evil” by Bob Hamer

- “In Deep Water” is available through Emeth Press in Lexington, Ky, and Amazon.com.

- Paul “Chick” Herr of the Submarine Chub (SS-329) had this to say about “In Deep Water” in his review on the Emeth Press Web site: “Most of my World War II shipmates are gone and the old sub has long since cut up for scrap, but memories never die and the significance of our service lingers. This book revives exciting times for a Pennsylvania farm boy and proud old submariner. It is a thought provoking sea adventure … a must read!”

AU School of Theology honored Dr. John D. Fozard with the 2009 Distinguished Ministries Award, Norberto and Julie (Beam) Kurrle with the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award, and Dr. James W. Lewis with the 2009 Distinguished Service Award at the annual SOT Alumni & Friends Annual Awards Luncheon on Monday, June 29.

This July marks Dr. John D. Fozard’s tenth year as president of Mid-America Christian University. Echoing the academic fervor of his parents, John received a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from Southern Illinois University. In 1977, he earned his Master of Ministry degree from Anderson University’s School of Theology. Twenty-four years later, he finished a doctoral program in Theological Distance Education at Trinity College & Seminary in Newburgh, Indiana. [Pictured left to right: Philip Kinley, Dr. James Lewis, President Edwards, Dr. John Fozard, Dr. David Sebastian, Julie Kurrle, Norberto Kurrle, and Joy Sherman.]

For twenty-two years, before accepting his role as president, John worked in numerous positions, specializing in areas such as mental health, hospital chaplaincy, and ministry to the aging. Through his leadership roles, he has determined a need for the availability of prepared Christian leaders to face challenges on a global scale.

John’s goals for the future are clearly reflected in MACU’s mission statement: impact the world on every level possible through the tenants of Christian principles. His past accomplishments, in every ascending degree of size, mirror the noble traditions of our own institution. Whether in the church or in the business office, John has made significant contributions around the world.

John is married to Brenda; they have a daughter, Rachel Fozard Bailey, and a son, Jonathan. Their grandchildren are Claire and Garrett.

Norberto and Julie (Beam) Kurrle have been serving in Paraguay ever since they left the School of Theology in 2002. For Norberto, it meant going home; his parents moved to Paraguay as missionaries in 1975 and have never left. For Julie, a Michigan native, it was a new adventure. The young couple packed their Suburban and spent 70 days making their way down south.

Norberto and Julie work with Radio Alternativa, a 24-hour broadcast Christian radio station in Paraguay. They also work in the areas of Christian leadership and children’s ministry and are transitioning from work with Radio Alternativa to a commitment to Christian leadership in the country. They hope to train and disciples Paraguayans to impact their own nation for Christ. They also help the Paraguayans in their community with basic necessities, such as blankets, farm tools, and mosquito netting.

The Kurrles are currently on their second furlough since making their commitment in Paraguay and will be in the United States until August. They are traveling with their 3-year-old son, Timmy.

After earning advanced degrees and forging a career in the business world, James Lewis accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. It changed the direction of his life. He left a job as assistant director of Corporate Internal Auditing to study at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. It was a decision that has greatly benefited the Anderson University School of Theology.

Since coming to Anderson in 1992, James has served both the university and his local congregation, Sherman Street Church of God. In his current position as the seminary’s associate dean, Doctor of Ministry director, and seminary teacher, he experiences daily exciting forms of service to the gifted men and women called to equip themselves for service in the church.

James also has served the wider Church of God through membership on the former Social Concerns Committee, the Reconciliation Task Force, as curriculum writer for Sunday School, and other special assignments. He was recognized by the National Association of the Church of God in 2007 with its coveted Pansy M. Brown Christian Education Award for his committed service in advancing Christian Higher Education.

James is married to Barbara Kaye. God has blessed them with one son, Timothy [now deceased], and two daughters, Andrea Nicole and Kimberli Chantrelle – both of whom earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Anderson University. They also enjoy in their lives two beautiful granddaughters, Ameris Joy and Nya Simone.

Starting this fall, Anderson and Purdue universities will jointly offer students the chance to earn two master’s degrees at the same time. The degree program will allow students to earn, in a concurrent manner, a master of business administration from the Anderson University Falls School of Business and a master of science in technology from Purdue’s College of Technology.

Courses in the 56-hour program will be offered in the evenings at the Flagship Enterprise Center in Anderson. Students will progress through the program as a cohort group and will be able to finish the program in only 34 months.

Jeffrey Buck, director of MBA programs at Anderson University, said the format of the program is designed for working professionals, “using a schedule structure that is manageable for these individuals, while at the same time maintaining the highest quality standards possible.”

“First and foremost, this program is intent on providing a quality education experience that is delivered in an obtainable fashion. These are two degrees that are in-demand and through this arrangement individuals can earn both degrees with a substantial cost and time savings,” said Buck. “Our changing economy is dictating an increased need for individuals with graduate level education in both disciplines.”

The program will be offered one night a week from about 6-10:30 p.m. During that evening, two courses will be offered — one in technology and one in business.

“The prescribed curriculum and course sequencing are important features of the program,” says Buck. “Individuals in the program will be taking business courses and technology courses at the same time. This contributes to making the program one that is truly integrated and not just two separate programs.”

Faculty from Purdue’s College of Technology in both West Lafayette and Anderson will teach courses in the technology curriculum, and faculty from the Anderson University Falls School of Business will teach the business courses.

The program does not require a thesis, but students will be required to complete a capstone project.

The degree is coordinated as a collaborative effort between the Anderson University Falls School of Business and Purdue’s Center for Professional Studies in Technology and Applied Research. The Purdue center was created earlier this year to coordinate and implement professional programs available through the College of Technology.

Those interested in the program should contact the Falls School of Business at Anderson University at 765-641-4362 or mba@anderson.edu. Students will be required to apply to both Anderson and Purdue universities. Applicants are strongly advised to apply before June 1, but applications will be accepted after that date.

Wearing the traditional black caps and gowns, the 2009 class of Anderson University graduates lined up on the school’s campus Saturday, eager to receive their diplomas, but somewhat anxious about their job prospects amid a shaky economy.

“I’m looking, but …,” said 37-year-old Dawn Vetor, of Madison County, her voice trailing off. “I have some prospects, but nothing fluid.”

Angela Shelton, 30, Anderson, a former paraeducator at East Side Middle School, was a little more upbeat.

“I’m optimistic,” said Shelton, her silver braces shined as she flashed a bright grin. “I’m looking for a job.”

Both women, graduating with bachelor’s degrees in organizational leadership, were among the 700 students going through Anderson University’s 91st commencement.

Like Shelton, many graduates were hopeful of their future job prospects, despite not yet having offers.

“I’m trying to be optimistic,” said Jon Weber, 22, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. “It’s rough.”

Weber, who received a degree in marketing, said he’s had five interviews and applied at 15 to 20 companies. But he’s received no offers.

Emily Wasonga seemed nonplused at her job prospects. The 21-year-old native of Kenya earned degrees in international education and communications on Saturday. She said she had no concrete career plans, but emphasized the university’s aim of instilling a sense of Christian service in its students. She said she wants to work in a humanitarian field.

“If it’s a matter of making money,” Wasonga said, “there are a lot of ways to make money.”

Commencement speaker Carl H. Caldwell touched on the unsettling nature of the times.

“To say you graduate in an uncertain time is an understatement,” he said. “If you’re not worried about this, I guarantee your parents are.”

But Caldwell said there’s a lack of certainty at all times — including when he graduated from Anderson University in 1966 during the Cold War.

“Every graduating class has had to face problems,” he said.

Caldwell, the school’s vice president of academic affairs, retired at the end of the school year. He had been with Anderson University since 1996. He earned his master’s degree in history from Ohio University and his doctorate in history from Indiana University.

Next year, Caldwell and his wife, Carolyn, an accounting professor at AU, will move to the Middle East, where they will teach at American University of Iraq in Sulaimani.

But Caldwell’s speech offered a reassuring tone.

“Seeing you before me, I feel very proud of our future,” he said.

Anderson, Ind. — AU School of Theology recently received a $5,000 grant for scholarship support from the Chatlos Foundation. The scholarship was created to help pastors from small churches attend online seminary courses.

About 70% of all Church of God congregations have fewer than 100 regular attenders. As a result many pastors have difficulty financing seminary education. Many pastors are bi-vocational or retired minsters who continue serving in retirement.

This scholarship aims at alleviating part of that burden. “I am excited that the Chatlos Foundation has provided this innovative scholarship, which will allow the pastor of a small church to take the online Master of Arts in Christian Ministries degree that we offer at the School of Theology,” said John Aukerman.

“We are particularly concerned about relieving the burden of debt repayment for our graduates, because many are intending to minister with church settings or to under-served populations where they cannot expect high remunerations.” said David Sebastian, Dean of the School of Theology.

“I look forward to receiving applications from pastors of small churches, and to making the announcement of the pastor chosen to receive this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Aukerman.

To apply for the scholarship, download the application. The application deadline is May 15.

Sarah Blake’s journey into ministry started the day she was born.

Three months premature and not breathing at birth, Blake wasn’t supposed to make it. Now that she’s a senior at Anderson University, she takes the miracle that she’s alive as a sign that she’s on the right path in the school’s master divinity program.

“I chose to identify myself as a person of faith at a very young age, and it was a very emotional decision,” Blake said. “For me, it came down to realizing I had already invested so much in this.”

At a time when more Christians are leaving their faith, Blake is confident her decision to go into ministry was a wise one.

“My role in ministry is to serve as a resource person that people can come to in their journey,” she said. “People are either going to be on a faith journey or not. I don’t put pressure on myself to try to win people. My goal is to be available to people in the way that they need.”

Blake, who hopes to continue her education and receive a Ph.D., grew up in a large city and was exposed to other faiths regularly, which helped her shape her philosophy going into the Christian ministry.

“I have been involved in interfaith discussions for a good 20 years, and that plays a role in how I relate to people who are not Christians,” she said. “I’m much less likely to pressure them than some of the other people I know that are Christians.”

Blake’s course of study is common at AU, with a 10-year streak of growing enrollment in the university’s School of Theology. The program trains students to be active in churches or as missionaries or chaplains.

“We talk about the call, God’s call,” said John Auckerman, Anderson University professor of Christian education. “We’ve got this deep theological concept that God is calling people into ministry, and that’s one of the things we work on right away, helping them understand their call.”

Auckerman said most students heed their calling to be in ministry, while a few pray about it and decide their best position is helping people in other ways. Feeling like ministry is a calling, however, is what keeps many students in the program.

“It carries a lot of our students through difficulties, through illness, financial problems,” he said. “They believe that God wants them to do this.”

Most AU School of Theology students grew up in the church and seek a place where they can continue serving God, Auckerman said.

School of Theology Dean David Sebastian said students see the school as a way to serve others.

“There is a new sense of particularly young people wanting to find value and meaning in life through service,” Sebastian said. “They seek to have a good, strong theological and biblical background for that kind of service.”

The school’s theology and seminary programs are in a growth stage now, though the trend always slows at some points. In the mid-1980s, the school saw a decline in theology and seminary students, but growth rebounded in the 1990s, Sebastian said.

“In the ’80s, it seemed that the word on the street was, even to Christians, you can make money, have a good life and be involved in the church as a lay person,” he said.

While that is still true, Sebastian said, the school eventually started seeing more second-career students in their 40s starting seminary before traditional 22-year-old graduate students started returning to the program in the late 1990s.

Blake said even in the lives of Christians, it is normal and healthy to question why they pursue their faith, but to her, the answer has become clear.

“If I have a set of morals, those morals come from somewhere,” she said. “Without my faith, there is nothing that I am dedicated to, nothing that guides the way I live.”
