For schools of theology, its time to bend tradition

Much talk and energy have been devoted lately to discerning the “future of the seminary” in North America. That future is uncertain, with many theological institutions facing financial difficulties and steadily declining enrollments. The larger challenge, however, may be cultural. If seminaries hope to survive, they will have to adapt to a changing world.

SOT to offer preaching clinic, other activities during NAC

The Anderson University School of Theology will host a Preaching Clinic on Saturday, June 23, 2012, during the North American Convention of the Church of God. The clinic is just one of many activities sponsored by the seminary during the convention, June 22-27.

AU honors community contributors

Lois Settlemeyer earned two degrees from Anderson University decades ago, so when she learned she would be receiving an honorary doctorate from her alma mater she was shocked.

“I was just amazed to hear the news,” the now-award-winning photographer said. “What an honor.”

During Saturday’s graduation service, Settlemeyer was one of four to receive an honorary degree, along with Charles Dickmann, Frank Campbell, and Johnny Wilson.

AU graduates look back, forward at commencement

Identical twins Elizabeth and Katherine Barwick anxiously lined up outside Anderson University’s Reardon Auditorium, adjusting their black caps and gowns.

It had been a lot of hard work, but the Mishawaka women said there was much fun mixed in with that dedication and they would miss their experiences from college.

They were just two of 645 who graduated from AU on Saturday afternoon at the Kardatzke Wellness Center.

AU alumna Beth Tharp named Nurse of the Year

Beth Tharp started out at Community Hospital Anderson at the age of 13 as a candy striper.

After graduating from nursing school in 1980, Tharp (Anderson University AS ’80, MBA ’05) returned to Community where she has worked her way from third-shift nurse to vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer.

AU restructures School of Music, Theatre, and Dance

Beginning with the 2012-2013 academic year, the Anderson University School of Music will be known as the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance. Along with this name change, a new major in musical theatre will also be introduced.

Summer classes benefit traditional and nontraditional students

For many students at Anderson University, scheduling classes can be a difficult task. However, with the inclusion of summer classes, some of that stress can be alleviated. Summer classes provide an extra four sessions in which students can complete credits toward graduation. The classes are also offered at a reduced rate of $350 per credit hour, which helps ease the financial burdens that many students face. These classes are offered in a variety of formats, including traditional, online, and independent study, and can help both traditional and nontraditional students earn credits toward a degree.

AU School of Theology announces Roitman as 31st Newell lecturer

The Anderson University School of Theology and the Center for Christian Leadership will welcome Dr. Adolfo Roitman on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, for the 31st Annual Newell Lectures in Biblical Studies. Roitman will present lectures focused on the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Heaton named 2011-12 Jeeninga Fellow in Archaeology

Robert Heaton, a Master of Theological Studies Thesis Track student at the Anderson University School of Theology, has been chosen as the 2011-12 Jeeninga Fellow in Archaeology. Heaton’s proposal focuses on digging at Tel Hazor, Israel, in a program offered by The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Hazor is one of the early cities mentioned in the Old Testament during the conquest of Canaan by Joshua.

Music professor is named to prestigious committee

Joani Brandon, associate professor of music at Anderson University, has been the recipient of many awards. Most recently, she has added being named to the National History Committee of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association to her list of many accomplishments.
