Every four years, the English department selects the visiting Vision Revision artist. This year, author Sena Jeter Naslund has been has been invited not only to lead Vision Revision in chapel but also to serve as the keynote speaker for the English department's first Writer's Conference.
"We decided to expand on the opportunity of Vision Revision by creating a full day of writing activities and by inviting people in the Anderson community, as well as surrounding areas, to attend," said English professor and chair for the conference planning committee Deborah Miller Fox.
Over the past 15 years, the English department has hosted many writers on campus to speak in chapel, speak to individual classes, and to participate in other campus events. Fox said the English department applied for a Falls Departmental Initiative grant in order to host a major author like Naslund and to hold the event for free. This grant enables the English department to complement the goals of Vision Revision by bringing Naslund to campus and inviting other local writers to be part of a day-long writing conference.
Organizing the conference with Fox are other English department professors Zola Noble, Elizabeth Imafuji, Jennifer Randonis, religious studies professor Spencer Spaulding, and AU student Meg Asmar.
The event is free and scheduled for Thursday, April 2, 2009. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. in the Reardon Auditorium Lobby.
