At Anderson University in central Indiana, the Department of Communication Arts has been preparing students, especially in the audio/video/cinema production area, for careers with a combination of classroom hours, studio work and on-the-job experience. AU students have gone on to graduate schools such as New York University, Regent University and the University of Florida, while others have continued on to careers with the Lilly Children’s Theatre and Disney Studios. The driving force behind the success of these students has been Covenant Productions® — an award-winning video production company located on the AU campus.
“We’re about taking people from being passive consumers of the media to working, active professionals,” said Donald Boggs, Covenant Productions® founder and general manager. “Covenant gives students experience. We’ve got a small, skeleton professional staff and students are right in the trenches with them. Students move up as they’re able. Many of our students have edited with clients. We’ve reached the point where we were comfortable that students could to that without breaking a relationship. It’s been an extraordinary experience.”
Covenant started off small, and the moment when they really got started, according to Boggs, was when they moved into a newly-renovated building in the southwest corner of the campus in 1989. Two years later, a phone call from famed gospel musician Bill Gaither began what is perhaps the most important moment in Covenant history. …
