Spring into Dance offers something for everyone

The Anderson University School of Music will hold its annual Spring Into Dance concerts March 25 and 26, 2011. This year’s concerts will offer a wide variety of choreography, ranging from thought-provoking to entertaining. Performances will feature students in the Anderson University dance program, with choreography by AU dance faculty and guest artist Jon Lehrer.

spring-into-danceThe performances will take place at Reardon Auditorium on the campus of Anderson University, and are open to the campus community and the general public. The performance on Friday, March 25 will be at 7:30 p.m., and the performance on Saturday, March 26 will be at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults; $10 for seniors and Anderson University faculty and staff; and $5 for AU students and other college and high school students with a valid ID. Children ages 10 and under are free. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance by calling the School of Music at (765) 641-4543 or (800) 619-3047.

Audience members will get a taste of what is happening in the world of contemporary modern dance through this year's guest artist, Jon Lehrer. Lehrer is the artistic director of LehrerDance, an internationally touring dance company based in Buffalo, N.Y. As a dancer, Lehrer has performed with the Eric Hawkins Dance Co., John Passafiume Dancers, and Merv Griffin. He was a company member and associate director of the Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Co.

jon-lehrerLehrer has choreographed for several dance companies in Chicago and around the world, including Thodos Dance Chicago; Instruments of Movement; Momenta Dance Theatre; Louisiana Dance Theatre; Le Jazz Groupe from Monterrey, Mexico; and Kannon Dance of St. Petersburg, Russia. He has also choreographed at universities across the country. In 2002, Lehrer was one of four Chicago choreographers selected to participate in the first-ever Dance Chicago Choreography Project, sponsored by the Chicago Community Trust and Sara Lee. He was selected again in 2004.

Lehrer teaches master classes throughout the U.S. and around the world. He is on the faculty of the Jazz Dance World Congress, Dance Masters of America, Dance Teacher Summer Conference, Chicago National Association of Dance Masters, and Chicago Dance Connection. He is a frequent guest artist at colleges around the country. In 2003 Lehrer received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University at Buffalo's Zodiaque Dance Company for his accomplishments as a dancer and choreographer. He is on the advisory board of Dance Spirit Magazine.
