AU student Melissa Strich receives Gold ADDY award

Anderson University student Melissa Strich recently received a Gold ADDY award by the East Central Indiana chapter of the American Advertising Federation. Strich, a junior visual communication design major, won the award in the student category for a logo she created in support of the “Called Out” youth ministry conference at Anderson University.

The American Advertising Federation is the world’s oldest national advertising trade association. The ADDY awards evaluate the work of artists around the globe for the world’s largest advertising competition.

The ADDY awards are held once a year and recognize excellence in advertising in a variety of categories, including photo, web, and design.

Strich was entered into the contest by her co-workers in the Office of Publications. “The award is difficult to achieve. There were about 25 to 30 people that entered the contest, and only three gold awards were handed out in the student category,” said Strich.

Art and design pieces were submitted from students at Ball State University, Huntington University, and Anderson University.

Strich received the Gold ADDY award during a banquet where she was able to network with professionals in the field of design. “There were owners of big advertising companies, designers, and print companies present at the banquet. It was a great experience,” said Strich. “It was nerve-wracking sitting and waiting, but when my name was called it was exciting.” said Strich.

In the Office of Publications, students are given opportunities to work with clients, which in turn, gives them experience for the real world. Kerry Shaw, director of publications, was one of the people who helped submit Strich’s work to the American Advertising Federation. “Melissa is up with the best of them,” said Shaw.

“Our clients love to work with Melissa,” said Julie Ward, office manager for the Office of Publications. “Melissa is a very talented young woman who portrays confidence, maturity, and creativity in her work. She takes criticism very well and grows from it.”

Strich is not afraid to try new things and explore her options. She created the visual design for last year’s campus theme, Restoration, as well as the campus theme for the coming academic year, Beyond Me.
