Spanish Teaching

Dr. Tim Fox offers assistance to a student in class.

The Spanish teaching major requires at least 36 hours of Spanish courses with at least six hours of overseas study. Students also study 6-8 hours in one other modern foreign language. Along with these requirements in language study, students complete an additional 33-38 hours of coursework in the area of professional education through the school of education. (This includes the Methods of Teaching Foreign Language course). Students planning to teach a foreign language in secondary schools should also consult with the director of teacher education.

The Spanish teaching major is a secondary licensure program; AU is one of only 12 universities in Indiana to earn national recognition from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

The major requires 45-47 hours of Spanish and language-related coursework through the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Cultures and 46 hours of education coursework in partnership with the School of Education.

What experiences will I have?

In addition to a variety of formative teaching experiences in local schools and a final semester of student teaching, students earn a minimum of six credit hours toward their major through study abroad. Most elect to go for an entire semester. Through these experiences we aim to graduate Spanish Teaching majors who demonstrate the content and pedagogical excellence and the intercultural humility necessary to lead in today’s schools and communities.
