Steeple on Anderson University Indiana campus.

1098-T Tax Form

The 1098-T Tax Form is for tax reporting purposes only and meets Anderson University’s obligation for reporting per IRS guidelines. The purpose of the form is to determine a taxpayer’s eligibility for various tax credits (such as the American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit) and deductions.

However, not all students will receive a 1098-T tax form. The IRS does not require the university to provide a 1098-T form for:

  1. A course for which no academic credit is offered, even if the student is otherwise enrolled in a degree program
  2. Nonresident alien students
  3. Students who have qualified tuition and related expenses are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships and/or grants
  4. Students whose expenses are covered by a formal third-party billing arrangement

Qualified education expenses are tuition and certain related expenses required for enrollment or attendance. This does not include:

  • Room and Board
  • Insurance
  • Medical Expenses
  • Transportation
  • Personal Living or Family Expenses
  • Education that involves sports, games, or hobbies
  • Any non-credit course unless it is part of the student’s degree program

If eligible for a 1098-T tax form, it will be mailed out to the student’s home address no later than January 31st. If eligible for a form a paper version will be mailed out and an electronic version will be available on the student’s Access AU Academics page. To find this click on the “Student Center” tile and in the middle of the page on the left-hand side, there will be a blue hyperlink that says “Account Inquiry.” This will take the student to a page with 2 tabs at the top. Click on the tab that says “Account Services.” This is the page where the student can pull their 1098-T. If one is not listed then the student is not eligible for a 1098-T.
