Music Education Degree

The music education major at Anderson University provides students with the musical knowledge and pedagogical skills needed for a career. Students who complete this program are licensed by the state of Indiana to teach music. They are highly effective at teaching musical concepts and at conducting and rehearsing musical ensembles to prepare them for performances.

Program Overview

Our students are part of a community of future music educators on campus and part of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) at the state level. They can participate in our vibrant Summer Studies in Music Education program with internationally known instructors.

Careers

Our graduates find their place in K-12 schools teaching elementary, choral, general, and instrumental music. They may also continue their studies in music performance, music therapy, or pursue graduate study to teach future educators. We also offer Orff, Feierabend, and Dalcroze certification programs on campus, as well as drumming and ukulele classes, giving our students additional skills and networking opportunities as pre-service teachers.

Explore TEACH Grants

Anderson University participates in the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant program. A TEACH grant is a non-need-based grant provided to students who intend to teach, in order to help pay for their postsecondary education.

As a condition for receiving a TEACH grant, a student must agree to teach full time for at least four years as a highly qualified teacher in a high-need field, in a school or educational service agency (ESA) serving low-income students, within eight years of completing or otherwise ceasing to be enrolled in the program of study for which the student received the grant.

If the student does not meet the terms of the TEACH grant service obligation, all TEACH grant funds received will be converted to a direct unsubsidized loan that must be repaid in full, with interest charged from the date of each TEACH grant disbursement.

At Anderson University, TEACH grants are offered to undergraduates who meet the 3.25 GPA requirement and have been admitted into the teacher preparation program (TPP). The director of the Department of Teacher Education approves the TEACH grant for each year that a student applies. Click here for a TEACH Grant Application [PDF].
