Jay and Amy Rouse enjoy life of music together

Jay and Amy RouseJay BA ’86 and Amy Rouse BA ’88 are two talented musicians who met at Anderson University. Their love of music not only led them to Anderson University, AU but to each other.

Ever since he was a child, Jay has been involved in music. He began taking piano lessons when he was about 7 years old. “Music just always sort of made sense to me,” Jay said. He then started to play at his church and with high school choirs.

Jay attended AU to follow his passion and begin his career in music. As a student, his campus job was playing piano for voice lessons. Amy was one of those voice students.

Beyond meeting Jay, Amy’s best memories from her time at AU are from her time in Chorale. She enjoyed working with the director, Dr. Rick Sowers, and going on the Chorale tour to Europe.

“I think it’s interesting how the older you get, you realize what you hang on to the most are the people,” says Jay. Both of them still have close friends that they met while in college.

During the first 10 years of their marriage, five were spent touring together with Sandi Patty, including an Asian tour where they performed in Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea.

“I don’t know how many tours we’ve been on, but we’ve been 25 pushing 30 years making music and grateful to do it,” said Jay.

Jay and Amy also performed together with a trio called Image. Some of Amy’s favorite performances were at an event hosted by gospel singers and AU alums Bill and Gloria Gaither called Praise Gathering.

“We got to sing for that one year. The stage was in the center and all the people were around it. We just got to meet some of the most amazing artists and speakers. That’s the highlight,” said Amy. Playing Carnegie Hall a few times last year were Jay’s favorite performances.

Last Christmas, Jay and Amy performed a Christmas concert with the Anderson Symphony Orchestra.

“Working with Sowers again, singing some of our all-time favorite Christmas music, and singing with AU Chorale” made it another performance highlight for the couple, said Amy.

Jay recently returned from another tour with Patty. He began this tour last February and finished in March. The last stop of the tour was in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Jay and Amy have two children. Their son recently graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University, and their daughter plans to attend AU in the fall to study dance.
